Robert Nathan Carper (AFN:1MV7-TF0)
According to the obituary of Robert Nathan Carper, he was called Col. Being one of the best known auctioneers in this part of the state (Audubon Co., Iowa). He also raised and trained Clydesdale horses and livestock of the highest grade.

SUDDEN DEATH OF COL. CARPER
Col. R.N. Carper, one of the best known auctioneers in this section of the state took suddenly ill last Saturday afternoon at the home of his nephew, Chas. Carper and before help could be summoned, he had breathed his last. He was making his home with his nephew and in the morning had assisted in work about the farm and sawing wood. He ate a hearty dinner after which he went into the yard. Sometime later, Mrs. [Chas.] Carper who was at work in the house looked out the window and saw him lying on the ground. She summoned help at once and a physician was sent for who pronounced his death due to heart failure. The news of his death was a great surprise to his friends and acquaintances in town. Mr. Carper was an old settler in Audubon County and for 25-30 years was actively engaged as an auctioneer. Perhaps no man in the county had a larger acquaintance. He lived in town until about a year ago when he went to live with his nephew on the Turner farm near Bethel Church.

Robert Nathan Carper is another of the pioneers of Audubon county to answer the call of his maker. His demise came as a distinct shock last Saturday afternoon as he had been in the best of health. Death was due, it is thought, to a stroke of apoplexy, he being dead when found. He was living (part missing) the old Luther Carper farm (part missing) near Luccock's grove. (part missing) morning he assisted in sawing.(missing)Following a hearty dinner, he (missing)to gather up the wood, while (missing)men folks left for a hunt.(missing)wife was about the house and missing hime about four o'clock, started (missing) to where he had been and found him lying dead in the gate leading to the house.
He came to Audubon county in 1877, and continued his residence here until his death. His earlier years in Audubon county were spent infarming. Folowing the death of his first wife he moved to town and engaged principally (missing) When in his prime he had few equals as a successful salesman. Probably no man in Audubon county was more generally known in Audubon county that (sic) he. Besides following the profession of auctioneer, he followed other pursuits and has been prominently identified with the county's welfare and at one time received the republican nomination for sheriff. He also was the stewart (sic) of the County Homeand under Mayor Hanna was marshall of the town of Audubon.
Robert Nathan Carper was born in Berkeley county, near Martinsburgh, West Virginia, August 16, 1847. He is the son of Samuel and Margaret (Hite) Carper, who emigrated from Virginia to Iowa in 1856. They settled at Mt. Pleasant, Henry county, where Robert N. passed his youth. At the age of eighteen, he went to Warren County Iowa. He remained here nine years and during this time was married to Miss Laura Turney of Henry County, Iowa in December 1868. After their marriage, they settled on a farm near Lacona, where they resided, until the fall of 1877. Then they came to Audubon county where they had purchased a farm. Mrs. Carper died December 20, 1877.
Left to mourn his untimely death are a wife and nine children as follows: Mesdames Wm. Rucker, H. W. Stearns, James Carper of Audubon; B. F. Carper, Winner, South Dakota; Mrs. Everet Bates, Howard, South Dakota; Burel Carper, Columbus, Ohio; Dr. Robert Carper, Maxwell, Iowa; Willard and Vivian Carper of New Virginia, Iowa, all of whom were present at the funeral. Besides the above he leaves four brothers and three sisters: S. S. Carper and C. H. Carper of Henry County, Iowa; M. L. Carper, Monta Christa, Texas; T. P. Carper, Winnipeg, Canada; Mesdames J. S. Scott and John Pratt, both of Henry County, Iowa, and [Mrs.} William Brown [Martha Jane Carper Brown] of Idaho.
The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 2:ooo'clock from the Presbyterian church in this city, the services being conducted by Rev. E. B. Cousins. Interment was made in Maple Grove cemetery.
Notes: I don't know who the sister, Mrs. Scott is, I just realized.
I've looked for Martin L. in Texas, and this town and have not found anything.
Date of funeral was 28 Jan 1914. Date of death was 24 Jan 1918.
Initials for Samuel Washington and Henry C. Carper are incorrect, and of course, family settled in Trenton rather than Mt. Pleasant.

Robert Nathan Carper was born in Berkley Co., Virginia August 16, 1847 and died January 24, 1914. He was married to Miss Laura Turney of henry County, Iowa December 1868, who died at Audubon, Iowa December 20, 1889. He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, nine children and fifteen grandchildren. The Children are Mrs. Wm. Rucker, Mrs. H.W. Stearns, James Carper all of Audubon, Iowa; B.F. Carper of Winner, S.D., Mrs. Evert Bates of Howard S.D., Burile Carper of Columbus, Ohio, Dr. Robert Carper of Maxwell, Iowa, Willard and Vivian Carper of New Virginia, Iowa. He also leaves four brothers and three sisters to mourn his loss:
S.W. Carper and C.H. Carper of Henry County, Iowa and Mrs. William Brown of Idaho. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Ed. B. Cousins, and Rev. Lyles of Dedham also took part in the service.

117 Notes from my Grandmother Delia Carper Havelin, who was Willard and Vivian’s mother. She told me that she went to the Carper home to take care of the kids after Robert’s wife, Laura died. They eventually married. She said that he was a very mean man to the two younger children as he was nearly 50 years plus when they were born. She was 25 years old when they married; therefore he was almost 25 years older than she was! After my father, Willard ran away from home at the age of 9, to the neighbors, because of the beatings with a buggy whip, Grandmother decided to leave him. She moved to New Virginia, Iowa to live and work. All of her early adult life was spent taking care of families, who needed someone to deliver babies, and she was referred to as a mid-wife, along with just everyday duties that a woman in this era was expected to do. (Note: She helped deliver my husband, Richard Ray Farr in Murray, Iowa). From New Virginia she, Willard and Vivian moved to Murray, Iowa where she married Pearl Havlin and lived. They, in their later years, separated, never divorced, and both are buried in the Murray Cemetery. She also told me that she thought Robert Nathan was shot at the well, pumping water, by a neighbor. Seems that Robert was seducing his wife and found out about it, but it was all covered up by the people closest to him.

In 1877 they moved to Audubon Co. His specialty was "buying horses and fitting them for market" and breeding Clydesdales. Nine children: Fannie; Maggie; Frank; James A.; Burel; Alvin B.; Robert Ingersol; Emma; Willard Warren, b 29 March 1899, m 20 May 1933 Lilah Jaunita Moomey, daughter of Clarence and Lelah Arnold Moomey. They have a daughter Carolyn, b 24 August 1934, m 4 July 1953 Richard R. Farr.
