Another Pioneer Gone178
Samuel Jones was born in the state of New York June 22, 1834 and departed this life July 19, 1911 at his home near Gilbert, Idaho, aged 77 years and 27 days. He was united in marriage to Sadie Poff near Maquon, Illinois, February 5 1871. To this union were born nine children, one of whom, George Jones has preceded him to that better world, having died in infancy 23 years ago. Mr. Jones was the youngest of a family of eleven children, all having gone on before him except one brother, Seth Jones, Now living at Grangeville, Idaho. Mr. Jones left a wife and eight children. The children are Mrs. Ed Liston, Grangeville, Idaho; Mrs. Cora Brown; William Jones, Southwick, Idaho; Mrs. Ettie Greenwood, Spokane, Washington; Mrs. Mattie Forney; Fred; Len and Glenie Jones of Gilbert, Idaho.
Mr. Jones was a man of strong will power and great determination. He was attracted to the west in his early manhood and made his first trip across the plains in the year 1861, by means of ox team with a large train of emigrants. After having satisfied himself with the west he returned home only to come again in the year 1888, bringing with him his family, landing at Grangeville. He has lived in this part of Idaho ever since.
Mr. Jones was a pioneer of this county, one of those to whom we owe much, and knew something of the hardships of a frontier life. He was a man of great physical strength, never was sick much in his life until his last sickness, which caused his death. He has been a great sufferer with dropsy for the last twelve months, but bore his trial bravely. Having accepted Jesus as his all in all, the end came peacefully after experiencing a desire to go to a better world, and assured us that he was and asking all of his family to make ready to meet him, then he fell quietly asleep and his spirit took its flight to the God who gave it. He was a kind father, loving husband and good neighbor and leaves a good many friends too, all will mourn his loss. But our loss is his eternal gain, and we would not call him back to this life of pain.
