[Sarah (Morgan) Boone might well have told her son tales of her own father's homeland in Wales. It is tempting to wonder if he ever knew that his mother could trace her family history so far back through the mists of time. A distant ancestor, Ifor Hael, had been a patron of Dafydd ap Gwilym the great medieval Welsh poet. In  Ifor's Court at Basaleg the poet describes Ifor Hael thus: 

He's of the lineage of a best-bred lord,
With fine retainers, gold helm, liberal, great.
A wealthy, venerable hawk,
His body very firm on a stallion.
Swift, tenacious, expert overthrower in a fight,
An accomplished, wise hawk of comprehensive discourse ....
