Notes for Martha “Patty” White
121Martha “Patty” White, first child, a daughter of David and Mary “Betsy” Elizabeth (Summerfield) White, was born in 1803 in Randolph County, West Virginia and died after 1870 in Randolph, West Virginia. She married Eli Carr on April 10, 1824 in Randolph County, West Virginia. He was a son of John and Abigail (Veath Vetch???) Carr. John was born in 1760/65 in Petersburg, Augusta Virginia. Eli was born in 1803 in Hardy County, Virginia and died in 1843/45 in Randolph County, Virginia. It was said that when Martha gave birth to their youngest son, Solomon Carr, he was too dark for his father’s taste, and Eli walked out. Eli left patty with a William Flanagan’s wife, who then killed them both and burned their cabin along with their infant son. I don't have documented proof of this story, it was just passed on to me. It's hard to trace the blood if it came from the women because there aren't extensive records on them like there are on the men.

Yes...it is Cherokee blood. I was relayed a story about my gggg-grandparents, Eli CARR and Martha "Patty" WHITE. It was said that when Martha gave birth to their youngest son, Solomon CARR, Eli was too dark for his father's taste, and Eli walked out (supposedly took up with "unknown FLANAGAN".) I don't have documented proof of this story, it was just passed on to me.

Found Martha [White] Carr living at William Flannagan’s residence in the 1850 census. [ccs]
Notes for Eli (Spouse 1)
Eli Carr (John5, Heinrich Henry "Roebuck" (Gehr)4, Hans Jacob3 Karr, Hans Jacob2, Hans Nicolas1) was born Abt. 1803 in Randolph County, VA, and died 1844 in Randolph County, VA. He met (1) (unknown -probably Anna Parks Flannagan, married to William Tyler Flanagan) Flanagan. She died 1844. He married (2) Martha "Patty" White April 10, 1824 in Randolph County, VA, daughter of David White and Elizabeth Summerfield. She was born 1803, and died Aft. 1870.

Notes for Eli Carr:
from "Randolph county West Virginia History-Families"
This family had a somewhat tragic history. Family tradition says that Eli and Martha separated, and that Eli and a common-law wife were killed when someone set fire to their cabin. Jacob was accidentally shot and killed by his brother-in-law, James B. White , at a turkey-shoot.

Marriage Notes for Eli Carr and (unknown) Flanagan:
Eli left his wife, Patty for this (unknown) Flanagan, but have never found a divorce, but Eli was living with Flanagan and their baby when the cabin was burned down with them in it.

Yes, I've heard this story. The story goes further. Solomon was named "Black Sol" and listed as Mulatto in the census. Family rumor is that William Flannagan killed Eli and his common-law wife by burning their house down. I have a picture of Solomon. I've tried to ask about the possibility of African-American heritage from some other family members but this is not a popular topic. I find this all quite interesting. One family member who was also aware of the mulatto listing pointed out to me that this term was also used for Native American people. Honestly, I've not heard of Mulatto used to describe Native American people. So, again, we are left with these questions. My hope is that somewhere there is an answer. Rebecca - WITTYSMITH
