Notes for Asa “Acy” (Spouse 1)
Notes for Asa Johnson:
Very little is known about my great-grandfather's immediate family, his mother and father, and I never knew he had any brothers and sisters until they were located on the 1850 census. Ben never spoke about his father and mother even with the ones he worked with. However, he would have been too young to remember them, as he was only 6 years old when his mother died, and we really don’t know about his father. We have found his mother’s grave with her in-laws surrounding her at John’s Chapel Cemetery. Asa’s nickname was "Acy" and his grave cannot be located or there is not stone. Any information would be greatly appreciated. We as of yet do not know who raised Ben, or if his father remarried after Malinda’s death. There are several blank years missing here that cannot be accounted for. [written ca 1982]
Since the above writing, I have spoken to Glen Murray whom Ben was his foreman when Glen was growing up. Glen at this time owned the land that Ben was being raised on which was the old Grantham’s field where about 5 stones are under a big old pine tree in the field and I remember an old house sitting not far from the trees when I was very, very young. The house has been gone for years.
I assume that was the house Ben and his Uncle Hugh and Aunt Margaret [Carter] Brown were living in at the time. In reference to his Uncle Hugh’s dates, when this all happened, Uncle Hugh and Aunt Margaret had 5 children and the last child, Henry Small Brown was just born April 12,1863 and this happened, Aug. 10, 1863. "Hugh F. Brown, Ben and his sister, Sarah, were all cutting wood. Ben was 13 years old at the time." Glen said that Ben has told this story many times to many different people. Apparently that really stuck in his mind.89
