Colonel??
another source says died in Arkansas

Probably named after “John Colter”, U.S. Mounted Ranger, who died in Nathan’s company several years before John Coulter Boone’s birth - John Colter was part of Lewis’ and Clark’s “Corp of Discovery” [see attached extended note on John Colter]

John enlisted with Captain Nathan Boone’s Mounted Rangers -
. . . He (John Colter) enlisted for a three month term at St. Charles, Missouri on March 3rd 1812.  He was under the command of Captain Nathan Boone, son of the famous Daniel Boone.  The Boone families lived on the north side of the Missouri river, and John Colter lived across the river on the south side.  The U.S. Mounted Rangers built block houses and ranged between the Missouri and the Mississippi rivers. They spied and reported on the movement of unfriendly bands of Indians and helped to insure the safety of the American settlers. . . .
