Notes for Francis Marshall
. . . said to be a Revolutionary War veteran, but the data is elusive.
144144. . . Eliza Marshall is still a puzzlement. Her marriage record lists her father as Francis Marshall. One descendant tells me that he was in the Revolutionary War, and there is indeed a Francis Marshall (VA soldier) in the DAR records. However, I have not been able to verify absolutely that Eliza is his daughter. I also am still searching the name of her mother. One record from the Shenandoah Valley says that Francis was married to Phoebe Hatcher and also to Sara ? If you happen to have data on Eliza, I'd greatly appreciate verification of her background. My father was certain that we are related to Chief Justice John Marshall, and even owned a pen and ink drawing of him (which disappeared during his illness), but I searched throughout Virginia court houses during the 20 years we lived there for some kind of proof and found nothing. In fact, Francis would have been a contemporary of John and could not have been in his direct line, but possibly a cousin. . . .
... this is a possible father of Elizabeth “Eliza” Marshall, who married William Lawson ... no proof [cs]
