8 May 1818 Knox County, Tennessee, Thomas Carter of said county, aged 55, declares he enlisted in 1780 for the war in Virginia in the Company of Capt. Kirkpatrick in the Regiment of Col. Gaskins, was at the siege of Yorktown and after the surrender of the British Army to General Washington, was discharged.
16 Aug. 1820 Knox County, Tennessee, Thomas Carter of said County, aged 56, declares he enlisted with Capt. Killpatrick of the Regiment of Col. Gaskins for the war. He owns one mare and colt, two cows and calves, fifteen head of hogs, one pot, one oven, valued at $118.00.
He has a wife aged 57 and tolerably healthy, and two children, a boy 14 and girl 12. He is a miller when able to attend to any sort of business but is old and infirm and much afflicted with sickness.
3 Jan. 1821 Knox County, Tennessee, Thomas Carter declares about April or May 1820 near Knoxville, Tennessee, he lost his pension certificate out of his pocket where he carried it.
1 Sept. 1846 Roane County Tennessee, Mrs. Betsey Carter of said county, aged 84 on 4 August last, declares she is the widow of Thomas Carter. She was married 9 Aug. 1784 and he died 25 July 1822.
17 Sept. 1846. Robert Pollard, Jr., Clerk of King and Queen County, Virginia, reports the Clerk's office was destroyed by fire 8 Apr. 1828 and all marriage records were destroyed.
15 Jul. 1847 Grainger County, Tennessee, John J. Bethell of said county, aged 92 on 15 December next, declares on 19 Jan. 1789 he left Richmond, Virginia for western Virginia in company with Thomas and Betsey Carter. They migrated to Montgomery County, Virginia, and lived in the same neighborhood upwards of 25 years. They afterward immigrated to Roane County, Tennessee, where Betsey Carter still lives. At the time they left Richmond they had a daughter Polly and a son Calip (Caleb).
16 Jul. 1847 Grainger County, Tennessee, Mrs. Mary May of said county, aged 78 on 4 May last, declares she was acquainted with Mrs. Betsey Carter of Roane County, Tennessee, and her husband Thomas Carter. She was married in Aug. 1789 and in 1797 Thomas and Betsey Carter located in the same neighborhood she lived in in Wythe County, Virginia, and Thomas was employed as a miller in a mill owned by Holbert Ellison on the waters of Pine Run at which time, Thomas and Betsey had four children, the two oldest being Polly and Calip (Caleb). Calip was about 12 years of age and able to plow.
Thomas Carter of Knox County, Tennessee, private in the Regiment of Col. Gaskins in the Virginia line for three years (war), was placed on the East Tennessee pension roll at $8 per month form 4 May 1818 under the Act of 1818. Certificate was issued 3 May 1819.
Betsey Carter of Roane County, Tennessee, widow of Thomas Carter, private in the Regiment of Col. Gaskins in Virginia, who died 24 Jul. 1822, was placed on the Knoxville, Tennessee pension roll at $60 per annum. Certificates 10348 under the Act of 1838 and 8263 under the Acts of 1843-44, were issued 6 Oct. 1847.
