Notes for Abraham Eschmann Hinkel
Abraham is the 6th known generation in the Hinkle family line. He was
born onthe 20th of March, 1749 in Upper Milford Township, Bucks (now
Lehigh) County, Pennsylvania. He was the 9th of the 12 children of John
Justus Hinkle and Maria Eschmann. His record of baptism reads as follows:
"Jost Hinckel and wife - son Abraham baptized September 11, 1749
sponsors Abraham Eschman and wife."
In the old Augusta County, Virginia Court Order Book 16, dated 19 Aug
1777, Abraham Hinkle, Thomas Miller (his father-in-law), and John Benne
were to view (layout) a road from Hampshire to the "Mouth of Dry Run on
the North Fork". In 1778, upon the death of his father, Abraham assumed
command of Hinkle'sFort. He also acquired that part of the land on which
the Fort and the Old Hinkle Cemetery are located. During the American
Revolution he maintained the Fort in support of the American cause and
also supplied food to the American troops. An old claim dated 23
September 1782, stated that Abraham furnished --- "one bullock 300 poun
at 2d (pence) per pound".
Abraham was a very prosperous farmer and at least 8 old land records sh
that he owned several farms from 40 to 439 acres in size in the old
Rockingham County, Virginia. He assisted his children and sons-in-law in
securing farms of their own through bequest or by direct loans of money.
He was constable of Rockingham County in 1779 and was overseer for the
construction of a road from the Augusta County line to the Hampshire
County line through the North Fork in 1781. In 1791 he was the executor
of the estate of the late David Harman for which he was paid --"one
beaver hat".
Abraham died on 3 September 1815, and we believe that both he and
Catharine are buried in unmarked graves in the Old Hinkle Cemetery near
the Fort. Abraham's Will, dated 8 December 1814, provides, in part, as
follows:
"First, I will to my beloved wife, Catharine, all the notes that are
given in her name together with the flax and linen, beds, spinning
wheels, cut reel and all the hausen furniture, and still tubs and grain
gums in the milk house loft, the foam and tackling one plow and tacklin
and gear, the little axe and three hoes, all my hay and grain, and thats
seeded, and all my hogs, three head of horse beasts, her choice, and six
cows, her choice, and six sheep and the sugar water barrels and the big
barrel and her full thirds ofmy estate except the money paid by him to
whom I will it."
He left to Joseph Lantz, his son-in-law, the home farm in return for the
care of Catharine and himself for the rest of their lives, plus 450
pounds. To his daughters Mary, Elizabeth, Susanna, and Catharine he left
10 pounds each, plus to Catharine- "as much property as the rest of my
daughters got when they left me". To his son, Leonard, he left his land
on the West Fork, and further provided for Isaac and Michael, his other
sons. Michael and Abraham Jr. were appointed executors. When Abraham's
estate was settled in 1817, there was $4,634.61 due the estate; mostly
debts due from his sons and sons-in-law for property he had sold them.
Joseph Lantz, for example owed $1,500.
THE THOMAS MILLER FAMILY
Many published references state that Abraham Hinkle married Mary
Catharine TETER. In 1980 this was proven to be incorrect, and Catharine
correct maiden name was MILLER. She was the daughter of Thomas Miller a
his wife, first name unknown, last name Deeds or Teets. Thomas Miller h
8 children, 6 of whomare mentioned in probate records for the estates of
Thomas Miller who's Willwas dated 16 Feb 1799, and proved 7 July 1801.
These records state that Thomas Miller's wife was the only heir to the
estate of Adam Deeds/Teet. Abraham Hinkle is mentioned in these records
as an heir to the Miller estate through his wife, Catharine Miller,
daughter of Thomas Miller. We have not been able to determine the da
birth or death for Cat
