Leonard Carr was born about 1771 in VA. He was the third son to move to the New Design Project of Monroe county IL. He was married there in 1798 to Mary Groots (1781-1821). He raised a large family who stayed a short time in Monroe county and moved either to St Clair county, IL , Jackson county, IL, into MO and IA. He died in 1851 in Monroe county,IL.
Besides the eight children listed they also had four unnamed children that died as infants.

1816 Monroe County, IL Tax list.
1820 Monroe County, IL census - 9 in household.
1850 Eagle Twp., Monroe County, IL census, living with Ludwig Pilger
1791 Leonard was mentioned in his father's Fairfax lease.
1795 Leonard was one of the "Scouting Party" from Hardy County, VA who traveled to Illinois to examine land for settling.
1797 Left Virginia and traveled to Monroe County, Illinois with brothers Joseph and Henry.
April 24, 1854 John Lemon was appointed administrator of Leonard's estate.
It was necessary to sell a land warrant for 160 acres to satisfy the debts. Leonard had acquired land warant #23,397 as a result of his service in the War of 1812.
The history of St. Clair County, IL says Leonard and his wife were married in Illinois October 10, 1795 by William Briggs, J.P., but the marriage was not recorded until October 4, 1802.
