To date, we have traced the linage of the Lawson family back to Scotland. Historical annotations, family records as recorded in bibles and miscellaneous papers have lead to a patchwork story about the Lawson's, how they arrived in the United States and where they settled.
It is believed that John Lawson (described in the following paragraph) was the son of one of three Lawson bothers: Hugh, John, or Roger Lawson, children of Captain John Lawson and his wife Katherine Howard.
These three brothers are believe to have a Scottish and/or Yorkshire heritage and as the story goes these brothers were expelled from Ireland and they move to the New World and settled in present day Pennsylvania around 1739. If true, this presents a logical understanding for how present day Lawson's arrived in of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
John Lawson, born in 1792, was one of eight children all believed to have been born in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. John married a lady by the name of Rebecca - no more information is known about Rebecca. John Lawson's siblings are: Nancy Lawson, b. 1779; Rebecca Lawson, b. 1781; Alexander Lawson b. 1783; Theopolus Lawson, b. 1785; William M. Lawson, b. 1786, m. Rebecca (Rebeka) Grigsby 1809, Frederick County, Virginia; Mary Ann Lawson, b. 1788; Holzen Lawson, b. 1794.
Save Theopolus Lawson, little else is known about the other seven children of John and Rebecca. Theopolus Lawson was married to Rebecca Hancock 1804. Theopolus and Rebecca's children are: Bushrod Washington Lawson, b: ABT 1825; John F. Lawson, b. 1826; Salathial Oral Lawson b: May 1836 in Warren Co., Virginia; Amanda Virginia Lawson b: March 31, 1838 in Warren Co., Virginia; Berthine S. Lawson b: October 5, 1840 in Hardy Co., West Virginia; and Elizabeth Lawson.
John F. Lawson, b. 1826, married Amanda Catherine Long on October 21, 1851 in Rockingham County, Virginia. John F. was said to have been a pioneer merchant in White Oak, West Virginia. He moved to White Oak from Rockingham County, Virginia between the years of 1845 and 1849. In 1850, he erected a store at the mouth of the creek in this town. John Lawson and his wife, Amanda had five children - four of whom survived: William Latimer, b. 1854; Florence Virginia, b. 1856; John Francis, b. 1858; Charles Bell, b. 1860; and Cora Lee, b. 1862. Since John Francis and Amanda Long were natives of Virginia they eventually returned to Rockingham County. John Francis died in 1904 Mr. Lawson passed on. He was the father of five children, four of whom survive.
Charles Bell Lawson (b. 1860, d. 1946) married Myrtie Kiester (b. 1878, d. 1943) on September 11, 1913. Together they moved to the Town of Dayton, Virginia and purchased a farm off State Route 42 just to the west of the town. They had two children, one of whom survived: Virginia Katherine (b. 1914, d. 1914) and Charles Byers (b. 1916, d. 1998). Charles Bell and Myrtie remained in the Town of Dayton until their death. Both Charles Bell and Myrtie are buried in the Town of Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, Virginia.
Charles Byers Lawson was born and raised in Rockingham County, Virginia. Following the death of his parents, Charles sold the family farm and on March 11, 1950, Charles married Margie Zelda Long (b.1924) of Mt. Solon, Virginia. Charles and Zelda moved to the City of Harrisonburg where they had two daughters, Sharon Ann Lawson and Karen Jane Lawson. Charles and Zelda remained in Harrisonburg their entire lives. Charles Byers was an electrician by trade and spent the main part of his career as the Purchasing Manager for Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative. He retired from SVEC in 1980 yet he remained active maintaining a part time job with Marvel Poultry (now known as Rocco Enterprises, Inc.) until the early 1990's.
Contrary to Minnie Kendall's report, Theopolus was not born in Scotland. He was one of eight children of John Lawson and his wife Rebecca, all born in Virginia. John Lawson may be descended from one of three brothers, Hugh, John, and Roger, who were banished from Ireland (originally of a Scottish and/or Yorkshire line) and first settled in Pennsylvania in 1739.
