Notes for James F. “Jim” Snyder
Stone at Weippe Cemetery -

Jim Snyder, 91, Weippe

Jim Snyder passed away April 13, 2011 at the Clearwater Valley Hospital. The son of Howard and Minnie Snyder, he was born March 29, 1920 just 300 yards from his present home. He lived in Weippe his entire life, with the exception of time he spent in the US Army during World War II.
His wife of over 72 years, Lavelle, survives at their home in Weippe. His grandson, Tad Mutum of Bellevue, ID, great-granddaughter Sasha Mutum of Orofino, two great-great-grandchildren Katelyn and Sage, sister and spouse, Joyce and Harold Buchholz of Lewiston, many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews also survive him.
His parents, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death as did his daughter, Marsha Davis in 2009.
He loved the outdoors and working in the timber industry.  He was a faller for Schmidt Brothers beginning with cross cut saws before the power saw became a primary tool. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for almost 20 years as a Brush Foreman while Lavelle cooked at a camp at Yakus Creek, then as a Silva Culturist, and finally as a Timber Sale Administrator.
After retiring in 1980 he worked several years as a contractor thinning timber, and building fire line.  He fell a lot of timber during his early working years but saved ten times more in his later years through planting and conservation.
He loved to hunt and fish and was fond of horses, dogs, and cats. Many stray cats found a life of dining on "Fancy Feast" cat food at Jim and Lavelle's home.
His love of cutting firewood and helping neighbors initiated a lifelong friendship with Bill Barteaux. Bill and Shelia have returned that initial act of kindness a thousand fold over the years in the love and support given to Jim and Lavelle.
To honor his request there will be no memorial service.  He will be cremated and laid to rest in the Weippe Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please send memorials to the Clearwater Humane Society, PO Box 2063 Orofino, ID 83544 or a charity of your choice.
