Marguerite A. Jordan was born August 6, 1920, in Pineville, Mo., to Curtis and Rose Ellen Van Winkle. She passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2012, in Pendleton, Ore., at the age of 92 years.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, November 10th, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. in the Ukiah School gymnasium with a 2:00 p.m. graveside service at the Long Creek Cemetery following. Send condolences online at www.burnsmortuary.com. Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is handling arrangements.
She attended school in Pineville, Mo., and Joplin, Mo. When she was 18 years old she traveled by bus to Union, Ore., to be with her parents who had already relocated in Union, Ore.
She met and married John Tarzan Jordan. During World War II, Marguerite and John moved to Portland, Ore., where Marguerite worked at the shipyards becoming one of the original “Rosie the Riveters,” welding on the new ships. They later moved to Mitchell, Spray, Elgin and Weston, Ore., in the logging business. In 1957, they purchased Battle Mountain Café on Highway 395 near Ukiah, Ore. She became famous for her pies. In 1962 they moved to Ukiah, Ore., and she operated the Trail Room Café until they took over the management of the Ritter Hot Springs. They later moved to the Middle Fork of the John Day River Ranch and managed the Mountain Inn at Long Creek. They later divorced.
She helped open Wally Muzzy’s lunch counter in John Day, Ore., serving lunches and her famous pies. She married Orville Shaw and lived on the ranch at Long Creek, Ore., working at the Long Creek Post Office, as well as raising cattle and paint horses. Orville passed away in 1992. Marguerite married Irving (Bud) Jordan on February 14, 1993. Bud and Marguerite belonged to the Main Street Cowboys and the Sidesaddlers. They attended most rodeos in the surrounding area, riding on the calliope in the parades. She received Sidesaddler of the Year.
Marguerite enjoyed traveling, gardening, having dinners at her home, time with her children, and serving at the Pendleton Senior Center. She loved having her family and everyone around her. Marguerite raised many of her grandchildren. When Bud passed away, she lived in Pendleton and Ukiah with her daughter Linda Kerr. Marguerite was a lifetime member of the Women’s Auxiliary Post 922 and a member of the Baptist Church, both in Pendleton, Ore., and in Ukiah, Ore.
