776Phineas Jones came [to Bradford Co., PA] in about the year 1808. He was a brother of Mrs. Comfort Peters, and came from the same locality.  He removed in 1818 into central New York.

Assigned Pension #9750 for his 3 years 9 months of service, applied in Columbia, PA on April 18, 1818 one month after Congress passed the Revolutionary Pension Act, qualified for an $8 per month pension and was also awarded $132.49 “In Arrears”.

Taken by Judge John McKeon in Bradford County, PA on April 18, 1818
Phineas Jones aged fifty eight and a resident of Columbia Township, Bradford County, PA and duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late Congress entitled, “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval services of the United States in the Revolutionary War.” That he, the said Phineas Jones enlisted in February 1780 in the state of Connecticut in the company commanded by Captain Caleb Baldwin in a regiment commanded by Colonel Herman Swift and continued to serve in the said corps until December 1783. He was discharged from service in the city of New York and was in a “skirmish at Kings Bridge.”

On July 5, 1820 Phineas Jones applied to have his pension transferred to Cayuga County, NY and completed another sworn statement to Judge James Glover. Phineas Jones aged 59 resident of the town of Cato in said county who being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows:

A private in Capt. Caleb Baldwin’s company in the second regiment in the Connecticut Line of the Army of the United States commanded by Col. Herman Swift – his first declaration dated 18th day of April 1818. His pension certificate numbered 9750.
Real Estate: purchased ten acres for two hundred dollars, on this pledge to the Gov’t 18th March 1818 that he has no other and if so it becomes forfeit by the contract. Personal property 30-40 sheep, 2 lambs, 4 swine, 1 cow, 1 old horse, 1 plow, 1 broken chain old harness for horses nearly worn out and utensils for cooking. His occupation farming broken by infirmity lost the sight of an eye in the army – family consists of wife Eunice aged 41 yrs., weakly Betsey 17 yrs., robust Samuel 15 yrs., Sophia feeble 11 yrs. old, Eunice 9 yrs old, Benjamin 5 Hardy and Olivia 1 year.
NOTE: Eunice was Phineas’ 2nd wife and family consisting of 6 children. Phineas married Hannah Turner in Killingworth, CT on May 30, 1785 and had our ancestor Stephen in 1788 and Peter in 1801. Hannah died in her late 30s in 1802.
