. . . lives in Grants Pass, Oregon . . . commutes to Roseburg, Oregon as an Optometrist [note ccs, Nov. 2002].
934Dear Craig,
Thank you for your quick reply. It is very interesting how I became acquainted with Gordon Lindley. I went to Wal-Mart Vision Center in Roseburg, Oregon, where I live, last Wednesday for a vision exam. My regular optometrist was off for the day and so I saw Dr. Gordon Lindley who lives 67 miles away in Grants Pass and commutes to work here. During the exam he asked me if I use the computer a lot and I told him I do so in my genealogy work, which is my favorite hobby. So he began to ask me about how he could find information to establish his relationship with Daniel Boone, as his mother had told him she was descended from him.
Since I love to do stuff like this I had him write down some things about his parents, etc, and went home to look things up on the internet, where I found your website. I also found other websites which gave a lot of information about Daniel Boone and his family for a couple generations each way. And I found stuff about Gordon's mother, Thelma, and other of his close relatives. Thelma is in the Social Security Death Index and the California Death Index.
I have not been able to reach Gordon by phone since I found this, so I have not been able to share it with him. He will be working in Roseburg again tomorrow, and we made arrangements for me to go to Wal-Mart to give him what I had found. I am excited to show it to him.
I do not have any more information about Jack Woodward than you do at this time. Gordon phoned his sister, who was going to see what else she could learn about him. Oh, Gordon said that he died in Moscow, ID in a nursing home in about 1947-49 and that he was born in MO. His wife Amy did indeed marry a man named Fisher after Jack's death, and she wrote books of poetry under the name Amy Woodward Fisher. I found a reference for one of the books on a website for Caxton Printers Ltd of Caldwell, ID. The book is called "Two Stars in a Window," published in 1946.
Amy's SS Death Index entry say she was born 20 Aug 1883 and died Spokane, Spokane, WA in Feb 1977. Her SS # was issued in WA. Thelma's death rec says she was born Thelma Olive (death surname Kidd) on 9 Feb 1909 in WA and died 10 Feb 1991 in San Bernardino (County?), CA. She was apparently married 3 times, once to Doyle Wallace Lindley, then to Ed Vennigerholz, and then to a Mr. Kidd. She had at least two children by Mr. Lindley, and one by Mr. V, a daughter named Jo Amy Vennigerholz.
I think there are some things that can be searched for more information about Jack Woodward. There should be a death certificate for him, although I looked in the ID death index on the net, and didn't find him. Perhaps his real name was not Jack, but I didn't see any for a man who died in that county by Woodward, either. But maybe the index is not complete. Also, census records could be searched. When I get to the local Family History Center next week I will search the 1880 census for his family, since it appears he was probably born by then. Then the 1900, 1910, and 1920 could be searched. Perhaps Gordon and his sister can tell us where they might have been in these years. And also, Ancestry.com has some of the 1930 census, but maybe not Idaho. We have a subscription for that at the FHC, but I don't have it at home. Finally, the county records of Latah Co, ID, and wherever else he lived would give some information. I will write to you again after I speak more with Gordon tomorrow.
Thanks again for your help, and this if very interesting.
