131Abigail, b Feb 1, 1654 in New Haven; m John Treat, son of Robert Treat and Jane (Tapp) Treat. Abigail's gravestone reads: "Here lies ye body of Mrs. Abigail Treat, wife of John Treat, Esq., who departed this life April 1, 1713, in her 59th year." John Treat died Aug 1, 1714. He was one of the most prominent leaders of early Newark, NJ. He was a deputy to the Provential Assembly, from 1694 to 1702; In 1709 he was representative of Essex Co. In the Assembly when one qualification was 1000 acres or 500 pounds in personal estate; In 1712 was Presiding Judge in court: and in 1713 was Major Treat. John Treat returned to Connecticut about 1674, where he was later chosen Governor. There he preserved the Charter of Conn. from the takeover of Sir Edmond Andros the Governor of New England, in the famous Charter Oak incident of 1686.

The new constitution allowed baptism of children irrespective of parents' church membership This was displeasing to the strict members of New Haven; the Puritan practices permitting this ordinance only for children of 'the elect.' HAT p. 3. Martin took the oath of allegiance to the New Haven Colony in Aug 1644; he m. 16 May 1651, Mary Charles, dau. of John Charles. So Martin b.prob. ca. 1620/30 (only a guess), which may have made him to old to have been your Mary's brother.
