By Lonnie Wheeler, Post staff reporter
Ray Boone's father grew up as a Kansas farmer and retired as a California carpenter. A smallish man, with little time for recreation, he had nothing to do with the baseball tradition that would follow in his family, except to have a son.
That was Ray, an infielder, and like many San Diego boys of his day, he practically lived for the game. The gang of them played it every day but Friday, when they would bicycle over to Hoover High School to watch Ted Williams play.

I have been researching the ancestry of Donald Ernest Boone, a brother of Dorothea Dale (Boone) McClure (because he is the father of former Cleveland Indians/Detroit Tigers 3rd baseman Ray Boone, grandfather of Bob Boone, now manager of the Cincinnati Reds and formerly catcher for the Phillies, Angels and Royals, great-grandfather of current major leaguers Bret and Aaron Boone).
Don's death certificate identifies his parents as William Boone and Lula Michaels, and on each census on which I have found her she is called "Lula" or "Loula" (except 1930 she is simply, "Lou"). I have seen his middle initial on censuses as "S," but haven't seen a record that provides his middle name as "Shelby."
These are tiny points, but can you tell me how you know his middle name is "Shelby" and how you know her name is "Louella" (as opposd to "Lula")?
I have some census stuff that helps make the connections backward from them.
