SELENA "MAXINE" WOLFORD HARPER, age 85 years, a resident of the Harper Farm near Hendricks, WV, went to be with Jesus at 11:20 AM, January 7, 2012 at her home, surrounded by her family. She had been in declining health.
She was born Wednesday, December 22, 1926 at Harman, the eldest daughter of the late Hayes and Alma Huffman Wolford. On January 24, 1946 at Harman, she was married to Harry Lloyd Harper, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son, Wayne and wife Margaret Wilfong Harper; one daughter Eleanor and husband Allen "Ford" Nestor, who all live on the family farm; one brother, Clark (and wife Carrie) Wolford; and one sister, Vera Jean Arbogast, all of Harman. Maxine dearly loved her grandchildren, Christina Harper, Jennifer Harper, Eric Lynn (and wife Cathy) Nestor, Cheryl Nestor (and husband Charles) DeBerry, and Kenneth "Kenny" Harry Nestor. She cherished every moment she was able to spend with her great grandchildren, Allen Dale Nestor, Anna Rose DeBerry, and Carla Maxine DeBerry; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a 5 day old son, Harvey Gerald Harper in 1947 and one sister, Naomi Wolford Huffman in 2001.
She graduated as Salutatorian of Harman High School with the class of 1944. Maxine and Harry operated the Harman Conoco service station for three years before buying the Arbogast farm along RT 72 south of Hendricks in 1951 where they raised beef cattle and sheep. In addition to working the farm, Harry also drove school bus during the 1960's. Maxine became a substitute school bus driver in 1967 and was the first woman school bus driver in Tucker Co. When Harry had hip replacement surgery in 1968, Maxine took over his bus route until her retirement in 1987. She was the first Treasurer of the Tucker Co. School Service Personnel Association and held that position until her retirement from bus driving. Harry died on Nov 4, 1985 after being trapped (along with several other people) by flood water in the Jordan Run area of Grant Co. He and his brother, Stelman Harper were returning from the Petersburg stockyard. Maxine continued to run the farm with the help of her children and grandchildren. Maxine was a long time member of the Tucker Co. Farm Bureau. She and Harry received the Farmers Home Administration Farm Family of the Year Award in 1964, and they took first place honors in livestock farming at the 1978 WV Young Farmer's Convention, and the Tygart Valley Soil Conservation Award in 1983. She loved the outdoors. Maxine was always found somewhere on her farm herding cattle and sheep, chasing chickens, or tirelessly tending her garden. When she wasn't outdoors, Maxine was reading and listening to country-gospel, occasionally catching an episode of Andy Griffith on TV and she was a noted cook.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Tuesday from 5 to 8 PM. On Wednesday, January 11, 2012, Mrs. Harper will be moved to the Dry Fork Assembly of God Church where friends may call from 12:30 until 1:30PM the funeral hour. The Rev. Rick Lewellen will officiate and interment will follow in the Harper Family Cemetery near Harman. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to; Tucker Co. 4-H Leaders, Camping Program, c/o WVU Extension Office, 215 First Street, Parsons, WV. 26287.
