1347I have been searching for over 20 years for the parents of Bryant Boone who was born in Hertford Co. 15 Dec 1789. There is some reason to believe they were James Boone and Mary Hare but have no definite proof. Bryant m Mary (maiden name unknown) about 1807-1808. They had a daughter Louisa born Hertford Co. 8 June 1809 before the family moved to near Nashville, TN ca 1810. Mary died after the birth of the third child and Bryant married Martha Phipps in Davidson Co. 1818. Family moved to Graves Co., Ky ca 1833. Bryant died there in 1837. Any help much appreciated. Mary Louise

On Nov. 26, 2010, I received an email from Mary Louise Gossum who provided additional information from the note above - I am changing my information based on her research:

“Craig, Bryant Boone is my 3rd gr grandfather and I live only  a few miles from where he is buried.  Somehow you have come up with the wrong information on Bryant.  In fact there is wrong information all over the internet. I came  up with the theory that his father might be James Boone and his mother Mary Hare.  That, too, has come up on the internet as fact and it is NOT. Anyway here is what I have

Bryant was born in Hertford Co., NC 15 Dec 1789.  (There was not a Hickman Co., KY at that time.  It was still Indian Territory and did not become a county until 1821. ).  The family left Hertford Co. and moved to the Nashville, Tn area and Bryant served in the War of 1812 from there. Wife Mary died there and  he married Martha R. Phipps in Davidson Co., TN 22 Feb 1818. (Fulton Co., Ky was not created until 1845.)The family moved to Graves Co., Ky ca 1833.  Mary Louise”

1348Mr. Snyder, I just ran across your web page and thought I would contact you in regard to Bryant Boone. I can tell you with absolutely certainty he was not born, nor did he die in Fulton County, That county was not created until 1845 out of Hickman County, KY. Bryant, with his family, moved from Hertford Co., NC to Davidson Co., TN , 7th Dist. and served in the War of 1812 from there. I have a sampler done by Mary Elizabeth Boone, Bryant's daughter, which gives the district. It was done before the move to Kentucky and reads that she was a student at "Mrs. Ellis's Female Academy."

The following quote is from Battle, Kniffin and Perrin's HISTORY OF KENTUCKY published in 1885, p. 223
"Hon A. R. Boone, Graves County, was born April 4, 1831 in Davidson Co., Tenn. and is a son of Bryant and Martha (Phipps) Boone. The father was born in North Carolina, emigrated to Tennessee and in 1833 came to Graves County, Kentucky (Feliciana...my note) where he purchased and improved a farm, and where he died in March 1837..............."

Bryant Boone, along with his second wife Martha, is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Graves Co., KY. near Feliciana. Also buried there is his son James Boone who is my ancestor. Mary Boone was still living in 1850, age 98, according to Graves Co., Ky census and it is assumed she is buried in Pleasant Hill but there is no marker.

As for Bryant being the son of James Boon and Mary Hare, that is speculation. Mary Rees, a long time Boone researcher, believed his father to be James. I came up with the possibility that Mary was a Hare after I found Bryant Boone as administrator of Luke Hare's estate in Hickman Co., KY (adjacent to Graves Co., KY) . The Hare name was common in the Hertford County area and Bryant and Luke were common Hare names.
HICKMAN COUNTY, KY WILL BK A, p. 199
Appraisement of the estate of Luke Hare, deceased.
List of notes:
R. C. Napier, due 1st of July 1834 $155.00
Thomas Cox $250.00 (he was son-in-law of Bryant Boone..my note)

Sale of the Estate of Luke Hare, deceased
Personal property was sold and the amount received from the sale was $107.37

Bryant Boone, Administrator

Appraisement and Sale of the Estate of Luke Hare, deceased, was returned in court, examined and order to be recorded this 14th day of February 1834.

H. E. Edrington, Clerk"

I hope this will straighten out the Bryant Boone situation. Mary Louise
