Notes for Leo Thomas (Spouse 1)
Leo Thomas Gibbons

Gibbons, Leo T. 86 9/26/1923 3/31/2010 Leo Thomas Gibbons joined his Savior and Lord March 31, 2010, after a nearly four-year battle with multiple myeloma (blood cell cancer). Leo was born Sept. 26, 1923, in Harlowton, Mont., to Mabel and Ross Gibbons. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps Weather Bureau during World War II stationed in Greenland. Leo requested a two-week furlough to marry the love of his life, Lucille-the furlough was canceled. A shorter leave was finally granted and Leo and Lucille were married Dec. 16, 1943, in Missoula, Mont. He had to return to service three days after their marriage. Leo worked for Lucille's dad and mom, Alyre and Clara LaCasse in Missoula as a cobbler, while he and Lucille started their family and he took classes at night for his certified public accountant (CPA) degree. Most of his career was spent in the forest products industry in Spokane, before moving to Portland in 1969. There Leo worked for North Pacific Lumber Company, living in Portland, Waynesboro, Miss., and back to Portland where he served as president and CEO until his retirement in 1990. Leo enjoyed many hobbies to the great benefit of his family. There was the motor home; the condo escape on the Oregon coast, The Capes; his wonderful woodworking shop creations including boxes, candlesticks, cedar chests, sofa tables and many, many custom order creations. And whatever Leo did, he did with passion, including baking bread, gardening, playing bridge, hospital volunteering and researching Civil War history. Leo most recently lived at Mary's Woods in Lake Oswego, which is still Lucille's home. Leo is survived by his wife and best friend of 66 years, Lucille; and his children, Teresa Pollock, Dolores Gibbons (Milton), Paul Gibbons (Dana), Elaine Masury (Clarke), Colleen Stockton (Stuart), Kelly Street (Bill), Kerrin Gibbons and Laurie Dunn (Brian). He is also survived by grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan (Laura), Stacey, Derrick and Shannon; and great-granddaughter, Claire. Leo was preceded in death by his infant son, Kenneth Leo; grandson, Colin; and siblings, Marguerite and Maurice. Leo lived his life and treated others with dignity, compassion, integrity and grace, all of which were underscored by his deep faith. His family can't begin to describe how painful our loss is, but we treasure our so-many memories of this sweet, gentle man. His legacy is one that we all strive to emulate. Surely my cup runneth over-I am now at peace. A funeral Mass will celebrate Leo's life at 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, in the chapel at Mary's Woods, 17400 Holy Names Drive, Lake Oswego, OR, 97034. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations of remembrance to "Mary's Woods Resident Fund" in memory of Leo T. Gibbons, 17400 Holy Names Drive, Lake Oswego, OR, 97034, Attn: Scott Warden.
