1028Hello...Thank you very much for your kind response to my previous e-mail..As you requested, I am sending more info about B.F. Snyder.
With the assistance of two ladies connected to the Vance/Davis families (Vera Tinney & Bonnie Vance Miller), we've found that he was the son of Sidney "Syducy" Snyder and Vincent Pennington... Apparently they were never married, so he held the Snyder name...Sidney later married John Shoemaker and had a son named David. The 1880 Census for Pendleton County, W.Va., shows the household for B.F. included his first wife Caroline Wilfong and their daughter Susan C. (Don's grandmother) as well as his brother David Shoemaker...It seems that the Elizabeth Davis I mentioned was B.F.'s second wife and therefore the step-mother of Susan C.
His third wife was Sarah E (Shirk) Roy...
Where this ties in with your line is that Sidney, the mother of B.F. Snyder, was the sister of John(4), Capt. Sampson Snyder's father...So, B.F. and Sampson were 1st cousins, and he is evidently the Snyder cousin that is mentioned in Fansler's Swamp Dragoons info even though he was just barely a teenager at the time...
Susan C. had a son (she wasn't married) Oley Job Snyder who was Don's father..There is no info on who Oley's father was and Susan later married (1) Wade Hamilton Summerfield (2)the Joe Brown who was hanged at Whitmer in March 1909 and made notorious by the lumber company's people and (3) George Washington Fansler...
We are in the process of putting together a more organized family history on B.F. and will forward you a copy when finished...In interim, if you would like info, please contact me or you can call Don at (304) 478-2175...As I mentioned previously, he just recently became interested in genealogy and is very excited about all this...Best regards to you and your family, Inez

Source:  Interview with Stella Lena Snyder 1996:
Stella Lena Snyder is granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin Snyder.
Lena indicated that he was part Cherokee Indian.  Lena called his first wife by "Betty" Davis and indicated this was her grandmother.  Benjamin's wife, "Betty" died when Lena's father (Henry Carl Snyder) was only about 3 yrs old.  She next remembers that Benjamin had a wife Sherry Shirk.
Lena remembers they lived in Dry Fork and then lived with her father, Henry Carl Snyder and the family in Canann Valley.  Lena remember Benjamin chewed snuff, had a mustache and would sing and play the "harp".  (When Lena described the playing and demonstrated some motions to me it sounded more like a fiddle and she demonstrated the stomping of the foot.  She remembers that he cut timber and that he was 90 some years of age when he died.
