"Samuel Bonner was large in stature, weighing more than two hundred pounds. His physical strength he exerted for the help of his neighbors for in disposition he was kind. His engaging smile and soft voice attracted the finest qualities of those with whom he associated and bestowed in them a reliance in his integrity. His wide knowledge of his environment was not confined only to his neighbors for he knew the plants and trees, their seasons and their medicinal virtues as few other men knew. Although possessing a fine intelligence, Samuel Bonner remained content to cultivate his small farm, bring down the wild animals of the forest, and gather from the fields and brakes the medicinal plants and barks whose curative values he utilized for the help of his family and friends."
