Edward is referenced as a lawyer, minister, judge and educator. He lived in both California and Virginia. Many of his descendants can be found in Texas, particulaly in Dallas and Shelby Counties.
He received his law degree for the University of Virginia in 1842. After the birth of Edward in 1844, he moved to the vincinity of Barboursville, Virginia; wher he practiced law and taught school. In 1849, he went to California by way of Cape Horn. He was appointed County (Circuit) Judge during a period of Squatter trouble while there. In 1850, his family joined him. Before 1854, he was ordained a Baptist Minister and in 1854 organized the First Baptist Church in Oakland and Sacramento, California. Sometime prior to 1860 the family returned to Virginia where in that year he was made pastor of Leigh Street Baptist Church and later the Clay Street Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia.
He entered the Civil war as a Chaplain and served with the 15th Virginia Rebiment Infantry. On 4 February 1864, he resigned his military commission and became the pastor of the First Baptist Church at Orange Court House. In 1868 he became the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Alexandria. In 1871, he was responsible for founding the Broaddus Female College on Cork Street in Winchester, Virginia. Later he moved to the vincinity of Clarksburg, WV.
