Mrs. Vivian Vera Shawhan, 91, of Napa, formerly of Tacoma, Wash., died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005 in Napa.
Vivian was born May 12, 1913, in St. Johns, Ore., the daughter of the late John Artimous and Amelia Gay Pritchard Miller. As a young child, she moved with her family to Caldwell, Idaho where she attended local schools and later received her teaching credential from the College of Idaho. While attending college, she met Willard Wood Shawhan and the couple married on May 29, 1937. Later they made their home in Portland, Ore., Visalia, and finally Fox Island, Wash. Following Willard's death in 1953, Vivian moved to Tacoma where she served as an elementary school teacher with the Pierce County Public School System for more than 20 years. Vivian was a very active member of Tacoma's First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, and also served as volunteer with the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Shawhan enjoyed gardening, sewing and reading, and will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Shawhan was one of seven children and was preceded in death by her siblings, Mildred, Art, Ethel, Paul and Garrett. She is survived by her sister, Alma Bell of Boise, Idaho; two daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Shawhan of Napa, formerly of Tacoma; and Trudie Atchison and her husband Jeff of Napa. Also surviving is her grandson Chad Atchison of Missoula, Mont., and a number of nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Mrs. Shawhan's life will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 8, at "The Chapel on Echo Bay" 400 Sixth Ave., on Fox Island. Private Committal will be beside her husband in the Fox Island Cemetery. Officiating will be the Reverend Monty Smith, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Tacoma.
