Description: Here is the locally famous "Murdered I Say" tombstone.

It reads: "Here lies G.B.B., Killed by the swamps, May the 21st 1864, Murdered I Say”
It also has his age sketched in but it is less clear to read.   My best guess is that is says 33 years, 0 Months and 21 Days.

George Bennett was the son of   Elijah Bennett and Barbara Bible.   George was married to Hannah C. Cassell on 8 Nov 1853.
=============
George Bible Bennett Killed
Not long after the killing of William Teter by mistake, a portion of Boggs' company of home guards and perhaps a portion of Snyder's company, including Captain Snyder, himself, raided the home of Elijah Bennett in the Bland Hills. Isaac N. Bland and a man named Allen were in the yard of the Bennett home. The raiding party fired on them and mortally wounded Allen. Bland escaped. George Bennett jumped out of a window and ran. He had gotten several hundred yards away from the house and would have succeeded in making his escape but ran into another squad of the home guards. They fired upon him and wounded him. He threw up his hands and surrendered. Captain Snyder afterward told persons that he tried to prevent the cruel mutilation of Bennett that followed but was unable to do so.

Elijah Bennett, the aged father of George Bennett, procured a large mountain stone and cut the following inscription in crude letters thereon: "Here lies George Bible Bennett. Killed by the Swamp Dragons. Murdered I say." This stone he placed at the head of his son's grave where it remains to this day. It is on the John W. Warner farm in the Bland Hills not far from the present highway which
has been built through that locality.
