Pvt John Vardeman McKinney

Son of William Franklin McKinney and Mary "Polly" Boone of Andrew Co., MO.

Note: John's date of death was incorrectly recorded as "1822," the same year he was born, in the Cemetery Directory of Polk County, Missouri, compiled and published by The Historical Society of Polk County, Missouri, Inc. Bolivar, Missouri, August, 1979.

He first married Rachel L. Payne on Dec. 9, 1841, in Wayne Co., KY. She was a daughter of John Wilson Payne and Agness Payne.

Children: Mary Agnes (Rev. Gideon Higginbotham), Katherine Margaret (infant buried in Wayne Co., KY), Pvt. William Franklin II, Martha Elizabeth (Loften Chappel), Sarah Catherine (Albert Fillmore McColm), James Hardin, John Gant, Charles Stephen, Lucinda Jane "Lucy" (Nathan Taylor), and Almira E. McKinney (infant).

They migrated to Polk Co., MO, to be near John's uncle, James Rane McKinney, and wife, Elizabeth Hutcheson Payne, who was also Rachel's aunt.

He was described in his Civil War papers as a farmer, 5'10" tall, dark hair and dark complexion, with blue eyes.

John was a Private in Company C, Confederate Army, Aug. 17, 1862-1865, Hunter's Battalion Missouri Infantry, name changed to the 8th Regiment Missouri Infantry, then 11th Regiment Missouri Infantry. He was a prisoner July 4, 1863, Helena, AR, later Alton Prison, Alton, IL, released in 1865.

Along with other prisoners, he objected to being returned to the Confederate Army, and took the Oath of Allegiance to the North. March 17, 1865, he enlisted in the Union Army, and was discharged Nov. 20, 1865.

He second married Mrs. Martha Carolyn Moore on Jan. 27, 1870, officiated by Joseph Ragan Callaway, MG, in Polk Co., MO. Children: Edwin Elias, Jason Hardin, and Emma Lee McKinney.

Martha's known children: Franklin and George A. Moore.

He third married Mrs. Hannah Corn (James) Taylor on March 6, 1881, in Polk Co., MO. John's daughter, Lucinda Jane "Lucy," married Hannah's son, Nathan Taylor.
