Notes for Bessie Ann Derrick
Bessie A. Snyder, 91, Lewiston
Friday, April 16, 2010
Bessie Ann Derrick Snyder passed away Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at Life Care Center in Lewiston. She was born Sept. 18, 1918, at Ontario, Ore., to Lester and Bertha Lynd Derrick, the fourth of eight children.
Bessie attended schools in Weippe and Grangeville. She was a few weeks short of graduating from Grangeville High School when her mother became ill. Bessie was uprooted to take care of her younger siblings at her grandparents home near Ontario, until her mother regained her health.
She eventually made her way back to Weippe, where she became reacquainted with a former schoolmate, Ellis Snyder. After she returned to Ontario, they continued to correspond. On Christmas Day he went to Ironside, Ore., to bring her back to Weippe. Bessie and Ellis were married Dec. 26, 1936. He was laid to rest on their 59th anniversary. They had one daughter, Carol Ann Quigley. They lived in Weippe and Headquarters most of their married life until he became ill and they moved to Lewiston. In addition to being a wonderful mother and homemaker; Bessie also worked outside the home. She and Ellis owned and operated grocery stores in Headquarters and Weippe, also a restaurant in Weippe. They had the mail contract to Headquarters and they were involved in farming, ranching and logging.
Bessie enjoyed having guests. She was an excellent cook and offered every comfort she could to make people feel welcome. She and Ellis were excellent dancers and traveled to many small community dances where they met many good friends. She loved her large extended family and doted on her grandchildren. Bessie always seemed much younger than her true age as she "tritted" around the house in her tiny little heels. She was always willing to go somewhere at a moment's notice and was fun to have along. She enjoyed playing pinochle and bridge, and made up her mind at one point to learn to ride a horse well enough to keep up with Ellis. She lovingly cared for Ellis throughout their life and kept almost constant vigil during a three-month hospitalization as he recovered from heart surgery. She lived at Royal Plaza for several years before moving to Life Care Center.
Bessie is survived by grandson Michael and Dawn Quigley; great-grandsons, Gib, Garner, Denver and Derrick Quigley; granddaughter-in-law, Joan Quigley; great-granddaughters, Alyssa and Jenna Quigley; and sisters Elaine Burrow and Patty Hyde.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Bertha; husband, Ellis; daughter, Carol Quigley; grandson, Gregory Quigley; sisters, Helen Carpenter, Lucille McGinnis, Mina Lewis and Betty Brown; and brother, Melvin (Bud) Derrick.
A viewing is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Malcom's Brower-Wann Funeral Home in Lewiston. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Weippe Cemetery.

Notes for Ellis R. (Spouse 1)
269It sounds like we are in the same family line. I know the names of Carr and Bonner have always been mentioned as distant relatives.
Denver Snyder lived in Weippe, ID. He married Sylvia Teed. They had 8 children. Mary, Robert, Ellis, Burt, Louie, Marie, Floyd, and Lilly. Only Marie, Floyd, and Lilly are still living. My father was Louie. He passed away in 1999. Out of all of those boys, only Floyd and Burt had sons to pass the Snyder name on to, and they only had one son each.
All except Mary, the children stayed in Idaho, pretty close to where they were born and raised.
From what my Dad told me, his father, Denver, died at a young age. I think he was around 45. My dad was only 14. His mother died only a few years later so their "Granny Teed" raised the family.
This Snyder family came from Elgin, W.V. The county was Dryfork.
[probably means Dryfork area in Randolph Co., West Virginia . . . near Elkins?? ccs]
