8 January 2009--Neil Erwin Shriver, 91 Ione, WA--OBIT--Neil Erwin Shriver, a 60 year resident of Ione, WA passed away Jan. 1, 2009 in Colville, WA at the age of 91.
He was born Dec. 24, 1917 in Orofino to Ralph and Edith (Dunlap) Shriver.
Neil was raised and attended school in Orofino, and graduated from the Orofino High School in 1935. He then worked a few years at a grocery store.
Neil married Naomi Romine in Pomeroy, WA on June 12, 1937. He later joined the United States Navy as a musician. He was stationed on the USS Bunker Hill and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II as an anti-aircraft gunner. Neil was honorably dischargved in 1945, and moved to Spokane, WA where he worked for the power company.
He then moved to Farragut, where he helped build the town, and operated a grocery store, gas station and meat market. He moved to Ione in 1949 and started Shriver's IGA store, which he owned and operated until 1972. Neil then went to work for several hard rock mining operations until his retirement in 1982.
Naomi passed away Feb. 24, 1995. Neil married ZELLA CRAWFORD on Aug. 24, 1996.
Neil's greatest passion in life was his music. He was one of the top jazz trumptet players in his generation. He was also a true sports fanatic and lettered in basketball, baseball, football, and track. In his later years he loved to watch baseball and the Gonzaga Bulldogs on television.
Neil enjoyed gardening and raising begonias, and always took care of his house.
Neil was preceded in death by his wife Naomi in 1995 and his son Reginals Neil Shriver in 1988.
He is survived by his wife ZELLA SHRIVER of Ione; daughter LaNean (Mike) Rhodes-Keller of Southworth, WA; daughter-in-law Patricia (Rick) Weaver of Olympia, WA; brother Wayne (Corrie) Shriver of Orofino; five grandchildren, Alex, Kelly Anne, Dani, Scott and Angela; seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Jan. 4 at the Ione Baptist Church. A graveside service was held Jan. 5 at the Riverside Cemetery in Ione.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Pend Oreill Fire District #2.
