Roger Daniel Bennett, 90, a well-known business man and a resident of Elkins, departed this life Sunday afternoon, April 15, 2012, in Nella's Nursing Home at Crystal Springs.
He was born Sunday, Oct. 9, 1921, at Hazelwood, German Valley, Pocahontas County, a son of the late Rev. Vernon Lester "V.L." and Lillian Susan Teter Bennett.
On Aug. 16, 1942, at Baltimore, Md., he was married to the former Ruby M. Rosencrance, who survives. They had celebrated 69 years of marriage.
Also surviving are two daughters, Sharon L. Graeber and husband, Mark, of San Jose, Calif., and Joanne Rosania of Phoenix, Ariz.; one half brother, Harry Viven of Camden, Del.; three grandchildren, Kimber Garrett, Robert Rosania and James C. Graeber; and four great-grandchildren, Brittany Jenkins, Patricia Graeber, Jillian Garrett and James A. Graeber.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Preceding him in death were one brother, Charles Edward Bennett; one sister, Nettie June Elmore; and one half sister, Evelyn May Wood.
Roger was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1940. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Navy in the South Pacific at Guam, Boganville, Sipan and New Caldonia and was discharged as a Marine Raider. He worked for 15 years as shop supervisor for the Western Maryland Railroad Roundhouse. He then was employed for Laton and Laton at Delaware, Md., and retired from the Southland Corp. after 27 years of service, being their number one salesman. After retiring, he built the first townhouses of Elkins known as the Bennett Townhouses and along with his wife owned and operated them for 21 years. He was a member of the Elkins Church of the Brethren.
The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel Friday, April 20, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Larry Poling will officiate and interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville where full military honors will be accorded by members of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post 3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
