James Riley Sapp, the son of James Grover Washington and Etta Florence Peek Sapp was born in Sullivan County on July 3, 1905.
Mr. Sapp, 82, of Queen City, died Sunday, January 24, 1988 in Kirksville Osteopathic Medical Center where he had been a patient since January 20. Before entering the hospital, he had been a resident of Schuyler County Nursing Home, Queen City, since 1982.
On January 9, 1926 at Eldora, Iowa, he married Melissa Mae Eilders and to this marriage 11 children were born.
Surviving are ten children, John Sapp of Beloit, Wisconsin, Mary Bellmay of Queen City, Paul Sapp of Yakima, Washington, Robert Sapp of Queen City, Mrs. Charles (Edna) Veach of Queen City, Larry Sapp of Waterloo, Iowa, Mrs. Junior (Betty) Lewis of Queen City, Ronald, Richard and Gordon Sapp all of Waterloo, Iowa; 35 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren and one sister, Sue Bauer of Long Beach, California.
He was preceded in death by one son, James Sapp in 1982; one great-grandson, J.J. Lucher, in 1980 and seven brothers, Henry Sapp and Dolph Sapp, William Sapp and four in infancy.
Mr. Sapp was reared in Sullivan County. After his marriage, Mr. Sapp was engaged in farming in Sullivan County until the mid 1930's when he moved to Hardin County, Iowa. While living in Harden [sic] County, he continued to farm and also worked in a blacksmith shop and in the coal mines. In 1940 he moved to Schuyler County and resided west of Queen City.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 26, 1988 in the Dooley Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Tim VanBebber, pastor of the Queen City Bapist [sic] Church conducted the services. Music was provided by Pauline Whitlow, singing "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" and "In The Garden". Burial was in the Pleasant Home Cemetery west of Worthington.
Bearers were: Rondy Farmer, Glen Rockhold, Gary Bender, Junior Robbins, Don Sparks and Larry Ogle.
