UI Journalism Student Lands Reporting Internship in D.C.

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Jessie Bonner, a senior studying journalism at the University of Idaho, arrived in Washington, D.C., Jan. 10, and hit the bricks running for a semester internship with the Scripps Howard Foundation in Washington, D.C.
"I began on the run and made it through the Presidential Inauguration at this point," said Bonner. “Being a journalist in Washington is not that different from being one in Idaho, except that everything is bigger, faster and more complicated. It’s a reporter’s dream if you can keep up. I do have a nice view of the Washington Post from my office.”
Since arriving, Bonner has written several stories about government regulatory agencies and Washington special interest groups, including a column about the presidential inauguration just published in the Lewiston Tribune.
She and five other interns were chosen for the spring program through a competitive process that included consideration of her published stories, an essay, recommendations from professors and her academic achievement.
“Jessie wrote about her commitment to journalism in her essay in a way that caught my eye – that she had found her niche telling stories for a living,” said Jody Beck, director of the program. “And, her stories about people who live on the road in their RVs and run with the bulls in Spain proved she was right,” Beck said.
The foundation brings 21 U.S. and three international journalism students to Washington every year to work as reporters for four to 14 weeks. Students work in the Scripps Howard News Bureau and produce stories for newspapers across the country. In addition to a strong focus on writing, the program includes visits to the Capitol, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the Student Press Law Center and other sites, as well as seminar discussions about news coverage.
“Jessie demonstrates a talent for sorting through complicated issues and telling compelling stories,” said Kenton Bird, interim director of the UI School of Journalism and Mass Media. “I know she’ll excel in reporting on politics, the economy and cultural issues in Washington, D.C.”
A 2001 graduate of Timberline High School in Clearwater County, Bonner came to UI to study interior architecture. After a year, she discovered that a major in journalism better suited her interests in writing and current affairs. She is the daughter of Mary Bonner of Pierce and the late Emmett Bonner.
Bonner has been a reporter and editor for the Argonaut, the UI’s twice-weekly student newspaper. She had a summer internship in 2004 at the Lewiston Morning Tribune, working as a general-assignment reporter.
The Scripps Howard Foundation is the corporate foundation of the E.W. Scripps Co. One of the foundation’s missions is to advance the cause of a free press through support of excellence in journalism, quality journalism education and professional development. The Foundation also supports an annual workshop for high school journalism students at UI each summer.

Jessie Lee Bonner and Charles James Litchfield, both of Boise, will be married June 16 at Settlers Creek Ranch in Coeur d'Alene.
She is a 2001 graduate of Timberline High School in Weippe and a 2005 graduate of the University of Idaho. She is employed as a reporter with the Associated Press and is the daughter of Mary Bonner of Pierce and the late Emmett Bonner.
