Notes for Jim Edward Hunnel
Biker killed in crash 'a loving grandfather'
Motorcyclist struck deer near Renner
A Crooks man who died in a motorcycle accident Monday night north of Sioux Falls was described by his wife as a wonderful man and loving grandfather.
Jim Edward Hunnel, 61, was on his way to his home from work when his motorcycle struck a deer on 258th Street.
Hunnel was riding west on 258th Street, just west of Ditch Road near Renner, when he struck the deer at 10 p.m., the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office said. Hunnel wasn’t wearing a helmet and died when he was thrown from the motorcycle.
“He was a wonderful, wonderful person and he loved to hunt and fish,” his widow, Linda Hunnel, said. “He loved to ride his motorcycle. He was a loving grandfather and looked forward to teaching his grandchildren to hunt and fish and outdoor camping.”
The Hunnels were married for 34 years and lived in Crooks. Jim Hunnel was on his usual route home Monday night after leaving work at the Hy-Vee store on East 10th Street.
“He was very outgoing,” Linda Hunnel said. “He was the kind of person that, wherever you went, somebody recognized him. He was always surprised by that. ‘Why do they remember me?’ he always said. “It was his personality. He was unforgettable, that’s for sure.”
A memorial service is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Sioux Falls, 507 S. Main Ave. Family will be present to greet friends starting at 5 p.m.
The family will have a private burial at Pioneer Cemetery near Baltic.
Hunnel is survived by his wife, Linda, and his daughters, Tamara Sanchez, Amber Hunnel and Jacqueline Anderson, and son, Michael Hammerlun. He also had four grandchildren.
