Solomon was named "Black Sol" and listed as Mulatto in the census. Family rumor is that William Flanagan killed Eli and his common-law wife by burning their house down. I have a picture of Solomon. I've tried to ask about the possibility of African-American heritage from some other family members but this is not a popular topic. I find this all quite interesting. One family member who was also aware of the mulatto listing pointed out to me that this term was also used for Native American people. Honestly, I've not heard of Mulatto used to describe Native American people

Yes, I've heard this story. The story goes further. Solomon was named "Black Sol" and listed as Mulatto in the census. Family rumor is that William Flannagan killed Eli and his common-law wife by burning their house down. I have a picture of Solomon. I've tried to ask about the possibility of African-American heritage from some other family members but this is not a popular topic. I find this all quite interesting. One family member who was also aware of the mulatto listing pointed out to me that this term was also used for Native American people. Honestly, I've not heard of Mulatto used to describe Native American people. So, again, we are left with these questions. My hope is that somewhere there is an answer. Rebecca
