Margaret died in 1808 and was buried in a family cemetery a few hundred feet south of their home on the Tygart River. Her grave was marked with a rough stone placed there by her son Andrew Skidmore Jr. In 1929 a forty foot square plot around the grave was deeded to the Randolph County Historical Society by the International Order of the Odd Fellows and a monument was erected to the memory of Margaret (Johnson) Skidmore. The orginial stone was set in the base in cement. A plaque placed on the monument said; " Margaret (Johnson) Skidmore; daughter of Andrew Johnson; sister of Jacob Johnson; and Aunt of Andrew Johnson, 17th President of the United States. Was married to Andrew Skidmore, a solider of the American Revolution, in 1783. The mother of twelve children, she died in 1808. [Note: a visit to this site in 1997 it was found to be in deplorable condition. The plaque on the monument was missing, briars and brambles had taken over the site and it appeared to be used as a spot for drinking and dumping trash.]
Margaret Johnson was the aunt of Andrew Johnson the 17th president of the United States. Margaret's brother Jacob Johnson, moved to Raleigh, NC. where he married, Mary McDonald. They had a son Andrew. Jacob drowned in 1812, leaving Mary and Andrew, they eventually moved to Greenville, TN. and Andrew became the 17th President of the United States upon the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865.

Andrew settled in Randolph Co., VA. (WV) a few miles north of the present city of Elkins. He undertook to constructing a mill race by digging a ditch across the narrow neck between the two channels of the river, about two miles below Elkins, but finding the fall insufficient he abandoned the enterprise.
Andrew served as a private of the Virginia Militia and participated in the Battle Of Point Pleasant, Oct 10 1774, under his brother Capt. John Skidmore. Taking refuge from the rain in a hollow log with his nephew, Andrew Friend, the log became crowded, Andrew pointed out another log near by and an indian shot off his right fore finger, his brother John was wounded in the hip in the same battle. It is reported that Andrew participated in several savage incidents with the indians.
It is known that Andrew and Margaret lived in Randolph Co., VA (WV) in 1777 as he is listed as having entered 400 acres of land along the "Valey River" that year. Margaret Skidmore Died in 1808 and is buried in what is now the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Elkins, Randolph Co., WV. It should be noted that Margaret is the Aunt of Andrew Johnson, the 17th president of the United States. In 1812 Andrew moved with part of his family to Sutton. his cabin stood on the south side of the Elk River at the mouth of Skidmore Run. Andrew Skidmore is buried in the Benjamin Skidmore Cemetery overlooking the town of Sutton, Braxton Co., WV., along with several of his descendants. His sandstone tomestone was carved by his son Andrew, Jr.

164Andrew Skidmore, of English extraction, was born near Norfolk, Virginia. He had three brothers, John, the eldest, born in 1835, Benjamin and Samuel. Of these, John was probably the most noted. He was a captain under Gen. Andrew Lewis at the battle at Point Pleasant, and his brother Andrew was a soldier in his company and both were wounded. Andrew subsequently settled in Randolph [County], on the river below Elkins. He commenced to dig a millrace across the narrow isthmus at the bend of the river, but after the work had progressed some time, he had a second survey made and he found that the fall was so small that it would not give power enough to run the mill, and he abandoned the enterprise. He raised a numerous family, and his descendants are found in several counties. He died at Sutton, Braxton Co., in 1826, where his grave, marked by a plain stone, may be seen.
