Notes for Johann Adam Biebel
43 - Much of the information about Adam comes from his military file resulting from his service in the American Revolutionary War. He enlisted 2 Feb1776 for two years and served as a Private until 8 Feb 1778 in Captain John Gratton's Company of the 8th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Mullenberg. Adam fought in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown and according to his wife's affidavit he marched as far south as Charleston, South Carolina. Adam was discharged from the army at Valley Forge on February 8, 1778.
1784 resided in Rockingham County, VA, list of John Fitzwater, with 3 "white souls," 1 dwelling and 1 other building.
1788 had 1 tithable [himself] and 3 horses, per Wayland, "Virginia Valley Records," page108. This list is based upon 1787 tithables and horses and has NOTHING to do with the Revolutionary War. Military officers were political appointments and they were in charge of a district. The citizens and horses were enumerated so that potential resources for the local militia could be determined, as well as assess taxes.
In 1788 Adam was listed with one tithable and three horses. In 1788 he was living in Captain John Ruddells Company number 11 and in 1789 he was living there in Military District Number 7 with 113 acres of land
Adam Bible married Madelean Shumaker, daughter of George, 17 September 1783, Rockingham County, VA, per marriages in Wayland, "History of Rockingham County," page 445. Strickler's "Tenth Legion Marriages" [taken from Rockingham County marriage bonds], page 31, shows the bond was issued in 1783 and that George Shoemaker, father of Mad., gave his consent.
1810 Rockingham County, VA, over 45. 1820 Rockingham County over 45. 1840 Rockingham County, VA, widow Magdalene resided with son Christian and is listed in the pensioners column as Magdalene aged 75.
Adam died in Rockingham County, Virginia on 2 February 1826, per his Revolutionary pension file.. An administrative bond was issued to John Bible on March 6, 1826 in the amount of 1000 dollars for the administration of the estate of Adam Bible deceased; bondsmen Joseph McMullin and John Chrisman On 3 March 1826 John Bible was appointed administrator of his Adam Bible's estate, Rockingham County, VA. On May 30, 1839 Magdalene was living in Rockingham County, Virginia and made her application for a pension resulting from Adam's service in the Revolutionary War. On July 1, 1840 their son John Bible also made an affidavit to support Magdalene's claims for a pension. In this affidavit he stated that he was 51 years old and that he was the administrator for his deceased father's estate. Magdalene was aged 75 in 1839 and [son] John was aged 51 in 1840.
