Description: Irish immigrant Charles Rogers and his wife Hannah (Skidmore) Rogers were the first settlers in the Wallback area. Hannah Skidmore was the daughter of Captain John Skidmore of Pendleton County, who was among other things an officer under Andrew Lewis at the Battle of Point Pleasant, October 10, 1774.
According to Edwin G. Rogers in "Descendents of Charles Rogers," they built a cabin out of buckeye logs, which became well-known as the "Buckeye House". It was located on part of what is now Pleasant Hill Cemetery, apparently near the edge facing I-79.
According to an article by Harry Sutton in the Clay County History book, Mr. Sutton himself had the cabin moved, perhaps to make room for I-79. He and some friends and family restored the log structure, with some modern modifications and a small expansion on the back.
The Charles Rogers house is privately owned, but in 2005 is no longer in the Sutton Family.
Charles Rogers is a prominant ancestor of thousands of people in the region.
