162Notes for John A. Skidmore:
John was born on the Plantation "Fishers Delight" in Kent County Delaware, June 10, 1736. soon after his birth, the family moved to a part of Augusta County VA. that is now Pendleton Co., WV.
John served in the Augusta County Militia during the French and Indian War. He was called out in 1755 and served until the end of the war. John married Mary Magdalena Hinkle in the early 1760's. Mary was a daughter of John Justus Hinkle. John Hinkle and his family settled in the section of Virginia known as Germany Valley and were the builders of Hinkle's Fort.
In 1767, John Skidmore was appointed Captian of the Augusta Militia and in 1770, he was commissioned as one of His Majesty's Justices for Augusta County. In 1774, John's company of the Augusta Militia was mobilized for service in Dunmore's War and took part in the battle of Point Pleasant. John was wounded twice during the battle, in the leg and in the hip.
In 1778, John was appointed a justice of the newly formed Rockingham County by Patrick Henry. The first Rockingham County Court, in session April 28, 1778, found John A. Skidmore "fit to serve as major" of the Augusta Militia. John declined the appointment, but retained his captaincy for several years.
When Pendleton County was formed in 1778, John was elected the first president of the new court. John served the new county for several years, including two terms as sheriff.
He and Mary Magdalena raised a large family in a fine brick house which he built on the South Branch. John died in Pendleton Co., VA. (WV) Oct. 12, 1809 and Mary died Oct. 18, 1829. They are buried in the John Skidmore Cemetery located 3 miles north of Ruddle, Pendleton Co., WV. along US Rt. 220, on the east side of the South Branch of the Potomac River. There are between 15-18 unmarked graves, with Capt. John A. Skidmore having the only marked grave.
163164Andrew Skidmore, of English extraction, was born near Norfolk, Virginia. He had three brothers, John, the eldest, born in 1835, Benjamin and Samuel. Of these, John was probably the most noted. He was a captain under Gen. Andrew Lewis at the battle at Point Pleasant, and his brother Andrew was a soldier in his company and both were wounded. Andrew subsequently settled in Randolph [County], on the river below Elkins. He commenced to dig a millrace across the narrow isthmus at the bend of the river, but after the work had progressed some time, he had a second survey made and he found that the fall was so small that it would not give power enough to run the mill, and he abandoned the enterprise. He raised a numerous family, and his descendants are found in several counties. He died at Sutton, Braxton Co., in 1826, where his grave, marked by a plain stone, may be seen.
