8This Moses, married to Ellen - also known as Nellie or Elen - is the son of Joshua Tichenal. In 1852, Moses and Ellen Tichenell sold her interest in land in Hampshire County (West) Virginia which in any way belongs to Thomas Abernathy, deceased, who was a brother of the said Elen, wife of said Moses Tichnell at the time of his death. This land came to the said Thomas under his father John Abernathy’s will. At the beginning of the deed, their names are recorded as Moses Tichnell and Nelly his wife. Several times within the deed the clerk spelled her name as Elen, but wrote it at the end as Ellen, although she signed with her mark. Their residence given in the deed is Allegany County, Maryland, as in the 1850 census. That census lists Moses Tichnall (sic), aged 41, with the following in his household: Eleanore, 42; John, 19; Joshua, 16; William, 14; Mary Jane, 12; Sarah E., 10; Hester, 8; and James, 5. Eleanor’s place of Birth is Virginia and John’s is Maryland. No other birthplaces of family members are recorded.
