Lily was adopted by Elias and Sophie, her aunt. She actually was the daughter of Sophie’s sister, Matilda Boice, who died of consumption at the age of 45. After Lily’s father died, the spelling of Boice was legally changed to Boyce because the family did not want to be connected to the Boice family.
