Freda Susan Yokum, 95, passed away Dec. 2, 2009, in Davis Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Yokum had been a resident of Elkins Regional Convalescent Center in Elkins since October 2001. She had lived all of her life in the area of Harman.
Mrs. Yokum taught school for many years in Randolph and Tucker County schools and took a great interest in all of her students. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren, the church Women's Group and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary in Harman. She was active in many organizations in the Harman area for years.
Born July 27, 1914, she was the oldest child of the late Floyd and Effie Cooper.
She was married for 55 years to Homer Yokum, who passed away in 1989.
Her son, Homer John, is also deceased.
Mrs. Yokum is survived by one daughter, Hazel Ann (Ray) Hesson of Upper Marlboro, Md.; one grandson, Stacy (Stacie) Sturdivant of Owings, Md.; and two great-grandsons, James and Matthew Sturdivant of Owings. Md. She is also survived by two sisters, Merry Ellen Dice and Yvonne Webster of Harman; and many nieces and nephews.
Four brothers, Morris, Worth, Eldon and Harry, preceded her in death.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Harman Church of the Brethren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the church with the Rev. Eli Hostetler officiating. Interment will follow in the Cooper Cemetery.
