Notes for Mrs. Mary [Cooper]
Jonas, Ely, John, Catherine, Elizabeth, Samuel and Clair

Other sources have indicated that Elizabeth’s name was either Elizabeth Bible or Mary Elizabeth Bible. There is much doubt in my mind that the wife of this Valentine Cooper had a maiden name of Bible. I believe that her first name was undoubtedly Elizabeth. I would be interested to receive information on this matter. See the e-mail below. ccs

Hi Craig,

I think the father of Jonas was, in fact, Valentine. I just don't think his wife was named 'Bible'. A 'Rebecca Lewis' wrote in reply to Woody Rush, "From everything I have read and seen, only the name Mary was known as his wife". From what I know about the Bibles, that's probably right.
I was at the familysearch.org site tonite and saw the entry that you mentioned. I also saw another entry that said Valentine's wife was 'Mrs Elizabeth Cooper'. Woody Rush probably combined the name of 'Mary' and 'Elizabeth Bible' (or somebody else did and he repeated it). Why don't you try writing Jack T. Hinkle, 8200 US 127, Addison, MI 49220? ( Microfilm: 1394234) I don't know if he's there anymore, but you could try. As far as I know, Jack Hinkle is the only one who says it's "Elizabeth Bible" .
I know we have Elizabeth Bible and Jacob Vandeventer marrying. The full citation is: John W. Wayland "Virginia Valley Records (Strasburg, VA: 1930; reprint Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1965), page 153.
"The following items are made up from a typewritten copy of Rev. John Alderson's marriage register furnished Mr. Henry W. Scarborough of Philadelphia in 1924 by Prof. Garnett Ryland from the original manuscript at the University of Richmond." page 154 '1777. . . February 3, Jacob Vandeverter and Elisabeth Bibl; . . .'
Geographically speaking, I know that (Joh. "Hans")Adam Bible lived at Brock's Gap in current Rockingham County. Elizabeth's marriage was conducted by the minister of Linville Baptist Church, although I suspect that he was the only game in town if one wanted to be married. As I remember, the Coopers lived in the Hardy-Grant County areas which would
make acquaintance between the two difficult, much less marriage.
I'm descended from the youngest son (John) of Joh. (Hans) Adam Biebel and Maria Eva Margaretha Muller.
Anyway, that's all I could find regarding Jacob Vandeverter/Vandeventer and Elizabeth Bible marrying. Everything else I could find doesn't give his wife's name. I hope this helps somewhat.

Notes for Valentine (Spouse 1)
This is what I have on Valentine Cooper:
He was born 1745 and died April 24, 1835 in Hardy County (W) Virginia. He Married Mary Elizabeth (Bible??) in 1770 and Had 8 children to include Jonas. Jonas was born February 15, 1794 and died January 23, 1794. He married Mary Rohrbaugh on February 9, 1826. They had 12 children to include Elijah J. Cooper, my gg grandfather.
Hope this helps. If you need any more, just let me know. Just so you know, Jonas had a son named Valentine Cooper II also so you’re not confused. [not sure who wrote this note to me, ccs]

Children according to will from Hardy County (W) Virginia: Samuel Cooper, Jonas Cooper, Ely Cooper, Elizabeth Strader, Catherine Hinkle, Claira McConkey
b. 1751??

another source says: b. 1745-1751 Cecil County, Maryland
Death: April 24, 1835 Hardy County, West Virginia

“John Steth had a Northern Virginia Neck Grant in Hardy Co. for 248 acres in 1791 (Vol. V, p. 278). Valentine Cooper was his assignee.”

We know nothing about Valentine's parentage. His wife name is Mary (as found on many land deeds in Hardy county) and there are many theories as to her name. A common belief is that her name was Bible. However, no documentation has been found to substantiate this belief. Valentine's signature taken from documents at the courthouse in Hardy county are shown below. It is difficult to make out Cooper from Valentine's signature. Perhaps his name was anglicized but his signature still reflects the original spelling. Possible suggestions have been Kufer or Kifer. Kufer is the German equivalent of Cooper.

With the Family history of naming children after relatives, I have my doubts that Vincens is the right link. I am more inclined toward Connie Cooper Laskey's possible connection of George, Job, Valentine and Henry in the Hampshire, VA and Frederick & Cecil County Maryland area.
The cemetery records say his DOB was Dec 24 1774 and died Apr 24, 1835 which obviously does not make sense but if the numers were read incorrectly and it was actually Dec 24, 1744 then it adds up perfectly.
I know Valentine was not born a Cooper, his is the generation that the name was changed from the original, however, what the original was I am not sure. I was always told the Cooper line was Dutch, from the Netherlands, and that they immigrated prior to 1700 possibly on one of the Mayflower crossings.
I have a copy of my ancestor Valentine's will which is how I know that this is my direct ancester as both Jon/Jonas and Eli are mentioned in the Family Bible my Aunt has in her possesion.
While in WV a couple weeks ago, I found verification of this Valentine's service in the Revolutionary war and his wife is listed as Elizabeth and it states he was born in Maryland but not his parents nor the exact place in Maryland.

Possible alternate spellings of Valentine Cooper’s last name: Koupper; Koupfer; Koepper

"By 1782, Valentine and Mary Cooper lived in the South Mill Creek area near Rough Run, South of Petersburg in what is now Grant County, West Virginia. In 1782 this area was Hampshire County, Virginia, then in 1876 became Hardy County, and in 1866 became Grant County."
"Valentine's tombstone is just a flat stone with a death date of 1835 at the age of 90 years.... His actual signature on his will looks like "Keiffer, definitely not Cooper, which would indicate German roots."

Kieffers/Coopers on Bilander Townsend arriving 1737
• I matched 24 for 25 markers (D.N.A. ed.) with a descendant of the Valentine Cooper family of Hardy County, West Virginia. who says they are of the Valentine Keefer/Keiffer/Kuffer who was a passenger on the Bilander Townsend that dropped anchor at Philadelphia on October 5, 1737. This ship had sailed from Amsterdam. Also on this ship was Vincent Kaffer (another twist in the surname spelling). The descendants of Valentine Cooper (born 1735 - probably in Germany whose's father is the Valentine Keifer(?) listed on the ship's manifest---this valentine is listed as 3 years old on the manifest). The manifest also says they are from Blankenloch, Baden, which may or may not be true. Anyway, in looking at the 12 marker test, I again matched 12 for 12 on Pete Keefer. This doesn't mean we are real close kin, but close enough to rule out a whole lot of other people. The one thing that keeps all of this together is that there were 4 or 5 brothers and Valentine (elder on the ship) is believed to be one of these brothers---who fought in the French Indian War in western Pennsylvania and some of the brothers then moved on to Hardy County, West Virginia. There is an area (National Park) that has a mountain called Cooper's Mountain. My thinking is and it could very well be wrong is that we all have a common ancestor. I believe the father of the Valentine Keiffer on the Bilander Townsend is the common ancestor to all of us. My line is proved back to John Adam Cooper, who died May 1778 in Berkeley County, W.VA.. He married Elizabeth Stroop (various spellings) who was the daughter of William Stroop from Germany also. We suspect that John Adam had a brother named Valentine, who could be the Hardy County Valentine and also a George and a Thomas. There is a possibility that this is where Frederick Is also a brother, but there are so many Fredericks that which one is the question. DNA has eliminated the Frederick in the Abraham Keiffer line, but there are still others. If you look at the listings of Rev. Stover and his Baptisms and Marriages, then you get a feel that we are all of the same family, but these church records are so sporadic that it is only speculation. I wish there was a general index of all people associated with the German Reform Churches in the colonies, but lots of material still remains to even be translated.
