Notes for James William Brown
90James William Brown was one of the first settlers of Southwick and was the first white man to be buried there.
James William Brown was born in 1828 [on the federal census in 1880 he was said to be 60, therefore he would have been born in 1820, not 1828 ccs] in Virginia. He married Martha J. Carper in November of 1849 at Hagerstown, Maryland in Washington County [or Berkeley Co., Virginia ??]. Martha was born September 21, 1834. Their 13 children were Joe, Hannah, Sam, George, William L., Mary, Henry, Mattie, Orlando, Ella, Emma, a baby girl, and Luther.
They moved to Mount Pleasant, Iowa in Henry Co. and in 1880 came west by covered wagon. They settled at Leland, Idaho for a short time before coming to Southwick in 1881, where they settled about two miles southwest of the town. This place was later known as the Russell and Phillips place. It is now owned by the Barney Driscoll estate and is being farmed by Armitages.
James Brown died in 1882 and was the first white man to be buried at Southwick. His body was laid to rest in a field of the Brown homeplace. It is presumed his body was later moved to the Southwick Cemetery, where his tombstone is located. His wife, Martha, died July 24 1919 and is also bured at the Southwick Cemetery.

1850 census, Berkeley Co Va: Martha (16) and William (24) are living in the household of Samuel Carper(39) and wife Peggy(36). The Browns have a one month old son (1/12) Joseph. Others here are Martha's siblings: Henry (10), Martin (8), Thomas (6), Nathan (4), Lydia, one twelfth, and Susan Carper, (80), the widow of Jacob Carper.
1856 state census, Iowa, Henry Co. Trenton Township. tells how many years residents, and for the Carpers and Browns it is 0 years. Samuel Carper's family is #118, no Lydia but a Mary E (6), Anna E. (3) and Samuel (1) are added. In family #121 is William Brown (29), Martha J. (21), Joseph (5), Hanah (3) and Samuel (1).
1860 census: Henry Co. Trenton Township. Samuel's family, same children as 1856, and William Brown's family are in separate houses, but next to each other. Wm. Brown is 40, Martha J. 24 [must be a typo . . . she was actually 34], Joseph 11, Hannah 10, Samuel 5, George 3 and William 5/12.

Margery Crawford Akin granddaughter-in-law of George and Cora.

ANOTHER NOTE AT ROOTSWEB:
James and Martha with their 13 children came west from Mount Pleasant, Iowa in 1880. They came by train to San Francisco, calif. then took ship up columbia river to the Dalles Oregen where they met their son Sam. They went to Leland, Ida. then on to Southwick, Ida.

aka: Martha J. Carper - “Margaret” in 1850 Berkeley Co., Virginia Census
another source says married, Nov. 1849, Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland
There is a marriage bond for them in Berkeley Co. VA. Marriage Bond Book 7, p. 162: "Carper, Martha Jane to William Brown, Oct. 23, 1849, surety Samuel Carper." These original records are too fragile to be copied at the courthouse. Two books have it, 1) Berkeley County Marriage Bonds: 1816-1852, no date, no author, p. 34 at West Va Archives. and 2) Marriage Records of Berkeley County, Virginia, for the Period of 1781-1854, Guy L. Keesecker, compiler and editor, 1969, p. 34 (Clayton Library).
