Notes for Anthony Garnett
79ANCI Gloucester County, Virginia, USAGARNETT, Anthony
[about 1700-Abt. 1784]
There is conflicting evidence regarding the birthdate of Anthony GARNETT. In some sources he is said to have been born about 1709 in Essex County, Virginia, while in other references he appears to have been born before 1700. There is a deed dated October 27, 1758 [from the Essex Deed Book 28, page 115] which proves that Anthony was the son of Thomas Garnett. The deed states that Anthony Garnett and Elizabeth his wife of Culpepper County, conveyed to Richard Noell 150 acres that descended to this Anthony Garnett as heir at law to his father, Thomas Garnett, deceased. In 1733 Anthony Garnett married Elizabeth Jones Boulware. Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert Jones who had served in the Burgess of Essex County in 1726 and her mother was also named Elizabeth. Anthony and Elizabeth Garnett moved from Essex County into Orange County and later to Culpepper County Virginia in about 1741. He lived at the "horseshoe" [deed book 5, page 57 for Orange County Virginia].
On April 13 1767 he purchased from the estate of Alexander Spottswood, 212 acres and in 1771 he purchased an additional 700 acres of land. It is also reported in some histories of the GARNETT family that this Anthony GARNETT was commissioned a captain in the Virginia Militia in the American Revolution---although he would have been too old [70-76 years of age] to be of much use other than in a recruiting capacity.
Anthony GARNETT's son, Robert "Robin" GARNETT went to Kentucky supposedly on horseback at the age of 90 years to live with his son Oliver. Robin received 2002 acres of land in Kentucky for the services of his son, Captain William GARNETT who was killed in the Revolutionary War.
Applications made by Anthony Garnett's descendants for membership in the Daughters of American Colonists stated that Anthony Garnett had served as vestryman of St. Mark's parish, Culpepper County and was a landed proprietor. A similar application for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution state that Anthony Garnett was commissioned a captain in the Virginia Militia in 1775. He served in recruting states quota of troops to serve in the continental army. [See manuscript state archives, Virginia list #7 in the DAR Library].
SUBMCulpepper County, Virginia GARNETT, Anthony [about 1700-Abt. 1784]
There is conflicting evidence regarding the birth date of Anthony GARNETT. In some sources he is said to have been born about 1709 in Essex County, Virginia, while in other references he appears to have been born before 1700. ["The Genealogy and Story of the Family of Robert Kirtley Garnett" puts his birth d ate at 1709 in St. Anne's Parish] He was most probably the son of Thomas GARNETT and an unknown first wife.
In about 1730 Anthony Garnett married Elizabeth Jones Boulware. Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert Jones who had served in the Burgess of Essex County in 1726 and her mother was also named Elizabeth. Robert Jones died in about 1730 and Elizabeth his widow along with John Edmundson, James Jones and John Rowzee as her securities gave bond as admini stratrix [Will Book 4, page 395]. In the division of the negroes, Anthony Gar nett and his wife received one-third of those belonging to the estate [Will Book 5, page 268]. Anthony and Elizabeth Garnett moved from Essex County in to Orange County and later to Culpepper County Virginia in about 1741. By 1742, John Elliott had married Sarah JONES, another daughter of Robert Jones [D eed Book 22, page 419]. The parentage of Robert Jones and his wife Elizabeth have not been traced. On December 20, 1741 [Orange Deed Book 5, page 571] the executors of Alexander Spotswood deceased leased to him "50 acres in St. M ark's Parish in Orange on the north side of the Rapidan River for the natural lives of Robert Garnett and Thomas Garnett his sons for 800 pounds of tobacco annually, the first payment to be made on December 25, 1743." After working as a surveyor for a a time in Essex County, Anthony GARNETT pushed about 75 miles further west and acquired holdings of good land in the Horseshoe bend of the Rapidan and Robinson Rivers from the Spottswood 45,000 acre grant. The Rapidan is a tributary of the Rappahannock. Anthony GARNETT owned and lived at the property known as the "Horseshoe" farm [deed book 5, page 57 for Orange County Virginia] which he gradually expanded to more than 1,000 acres. Nothing authentic is now known about the house that Anthony built at "Horseshoe Farm". Although this property has passed out of the GARNETT family, the place still goes by the name "Horsehoe Farm". "The Horseshoe" is located at the confluence of the Rapidan and Robinson Rivers, on the north side of the Rapidan River and east side of the Robinson River. The horseshoe is formed by a large west to south loop made by the Robinson River, just before it flows into the Rapidan. This of course is the plantation owned by Anthony Garnett, and passed on later to his son Robert "Robin" Garnett. The site is less than a m ile west of the town of Rapidan. Deeds dated in July of 1736 in which this A nthony GARNETT describes himself as of St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper County and as the son of Thomas GARNETT. In the first deed, Anthony GARNETT and his wife Elizabeth [daughter of Robert JONES] convey lands inherited from Robert JONES to Anthony's brother James GARNETT. This deed is dated July 19, 1736. A second deed signed on the following day [July 20 1736 releassed lands in th e Parish of St. Ann, Essex County, to James GARNETT. [Deed Book Number 21, p ages 215 and 217, Essex County]. There is a deed dated October 27, 1758 [from the Essex Deed Book 28, page 115] which proves that Anthony was the son of Th omas Garnett. The deed states that Anthony Garnett and Elizabeth his wife of Culpepper County, conveyed to Richard Noell 150 acres that descended to this Anthony Garnett as heir at law to his father, Thomas Garnett, deceased. In a ddition to being a substantial landowner, Anthony GARNETT was senior Warden o f St. Marks Episcopal Church from 1758 until his death. He also served as Captain of the County Militia in 1770 and a member
