Notes for Susan Jane Porter
another source: he married SUSAN PORTER 23 Jun 1851

196Note:
Susan PORTER was "a full blooded Navahoe Indian" according to Erma BAUGHMAN , a great granddaughter of Susan PORTER and Isaac J. NELSON. Mrs. Baughman was 81 years old when she corresponded with me in August 1995.
According to Jennie L. Hott, genealogist, Susan Porter's ancestry is unclear. Susan's daughter, Hester, said that Susan's mother was Lottie COBERLY. Jennie could find no information to varify this. Some of the family believe that Susan had Indian blood as well, but this has not been proven.

On the death certificate for Susan Porter Nelson it states that her mother’s maiden name was “Sallie Coberly”. See the following possible explanation for this as I have Sarah Tingler as the mother of Susan. [ccs] --

Pat,
I looked at the death records entry (not the certificate) in the courthouse in Elkins and apparently mistook Sallie for Lottie (my mistake).   I so glad you pointed that out.
In the court records of Pendleton, July 5, 1814 find the following: "Ordered that Elias Tingler aged 4 years the 5th day of December next be bound to Abraham Hinkle, Jr. according to Law and that Sarah Tingler be also bound to Isaac Coberly according to Law".   My theory for this (NO PROOF) is that Elias and Sarah Tingler were children of John (1785-1857) and Mary Hedrick Tingler (1788-bef 1817). Mary died before 1817 as John married Phebe Dolly June 1, 1817 and they went to Ohio.   Sarah was raised by Isaac Coberly and thus the family felt she belonged there.   I guess John and Phebe took the two youngest children of Mary,   Elizabeth 1814-1899 and Jacob 1816-? with them.   It is possible that Jacob died with his mother, Mary as no record can be found for him.   What do you think of this theory?   Wish there were some sort of proof.
By the way, I have August 4, 1831 birthday for Susan Porter Nelson.
Jennie
