“Is the John Willis who died in 1762 the same one who married Elizabeth Plunkett? Their son William Willis (born 1742) was the father of Captain Isaac Willis my ggg grandfather.”

In 1737 he sold his 1669 grandfather's patent in Hanover Parish. This is about the time that the family moved to Orange County, VA. It is thought that John Willis and his brother William, together with Joshua Hudson and Benjamin Hawkins, lived near Petty's Mill Run South of the Rapidan River.

161198Hello Stewart:
Dick Brunt (DBrunt1@aol.com) sent me this message on 9/8/97:
"I have an Elizabeth Plunkett born ca 1715 probably King George Co and died ca 1798. She married John Willis born 1709 Richmond VA died 1761 Orange Co VA. Their daughter was Margaret Willis born 25-2-1741 King Geoege Co Va died 1812 Boone Co KY. Elizabeth's father was John Plunkett born ca 1685 VA and she had a brother named John Plunkett ca 1710. I don't know if these are the ones you are interested in. I have no other info about them and if they are yours and you can make a connection between John Sr and Alexander of Westmoreland, I'd be interested in hearing from you."
The following is quoted in Ivy, "Ten Thousand Plunketts," vol. I, page 356:
"The following information on Sarah Cordes was taken from an undated sketch 'Pertaining to the Genealogy of the DOWDEN Family" written by Miss Sarah Ann Pilcher who was born ca 1815-1820 and who was the daughter of Benjamin Pilcher and Alice Plunkett, the granddaughter of Reuben Plunkett and Nancy Purvis, and the great-granddaughter of William Plunkett and Sarah Cordes."
"Quotations from the writing of Miss Sarah Ann Pilcher:
"Our great-great-grandfather Plunkett was an Episcopal Clergyman whose father, Lord Plunkett, was the first of the family that emigrated to America in the latter part of the 17th century. He settled in Caroline County, Virginia.
"Lord Plunkett returned to England and our ancestor married a Miss Monroe who numbered a President of the United States amongst the descendants in her family. They had two sons, one of them, William was our great-grandfather. He held office of Tobacco Inspector for that part of the colony that now comprises Virginia and Maryland. His office was conferred by George III and was quite a sinecure in colonial times. He married a very elegant and accomplished lady, SARAH CORDES, (pronounced Korday); her grandfather was one of the many Huguenots who fled from Papal persecution in France and settled on the Ashley and Cooper Rivers in South Carolina, where our ancestor found and married her. They had seven sons and four daughters."
Anyway, they way I've put all of this together is that the person she referred to as "our ancestor" was either John or Alexander Plunkett, and the person she referred to as Lord Plunkett may have been Thomas Plunkett who came to Virginia in 1651. It was John or Alexander who had the three children, John, William and Elizabeth. John married Frances Frank. William married Sarah Cordes. Elizabeth married John Willis. I wish I could say all of this is rock solid, but I can't. But, it's the way it comes together for me.
