Mathilda (Arvilla) Snyder passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 89.
Arvilla was born Dec. 26, 1920, to Carl Ivar Anderson of Sweden and Thelma French-Anderson of Montana. She was the oldest of three, with younger brothers Carl and Earl, and spent her childhood in Eureka, Mont., and on the coast of Oregon. As a teen, her family moved to Weippe.
She married Forest (Guy) Snyder of Weippe. During World War II, they followed construction work and later settled in Enterprise, Ore., where they established a saw shop. In the 1950s, they moved to Lewiston and ran a river-guide business.
Everyone loved Arvilla. She was known as the life of the party. She was friendly and hardworking. An astute businesswoman, she worked alongside her husband as a full partner in all of their businesses. Upon retiring to Kamiah in the 1970s, her passions were gardening, baking and family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy, and her two sons, Larry and Mike. She is survived by her daughter, Norma Mellick; grandchildren Vincent Stormes, Carri Kay Holdren, Gregg Munger and Amelia Lopez; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, whom she loved fondly.
Her life was celebrated by a gathering of her immediate family. The family suggests memorials be sent to Kamiah EMTs.
