Lewiston Tribune

Opal Virginia Walsvig passed away peacefully Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Clarkston Care Center. She was 99 years young. She was born Sept. 30, 1911, at Dry Fork, W.Va [parents, Henry Clay and Ella Elizabeth Smith Snyder].

She was one of five children. Her family moved to Fraser in 1913, then to upper Ford Creek, Orofino and finally to Pierce. She graduated from high school there in 1929.

Opal married Herb Gridley May 7, 1932. They moved to Bliss, Idaho, and farmed until 1955. They then moved to Lewiston. There they bought the Mint Bar and operated it until 1963. Herb passed away February 1966.
Later Opal married Oscar Walsvig. They lived in Riggins for several years then moved to the Clarkston area. They later divorced.

Opal became active in the Trinity Lutheran Church. One of the projects that she really enjoyed was making school bags for children that might not have one. She was an avid gardener and maintained an interest even at 99. Only in her later years did she need help with her garden, but her church friends helped her out.

She kept in touch with many friends throughout the years.

Others preceding her in death included two brothers and a sister. Opal is survived by her sister, Thelma McPherson of Juliaetta; three nieces, Phyllis Himmelright of Clarkston, Ella Joyce of Kamiah and Carol Brown of Juliaetta; a nephew, Bob Snyder of Boise; stepson, Myles Walsvig of New Richardson, Wis.; stepdaughter, Shirley Dickenson of Gifford; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 920 Eighth Ave., Lewiston, with burial to follow at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens. Viewing is from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston.
