2.Thomas Summerfield, Sr. and Joseph Summerfield were brothers.  They both just "popped up" in Pendleton Co. region in the early 1770's.  No one has yet found where they came from. Thomas was born about 1750.  Joseph was b. bef. 1761; he was on the muster roll of Augusta Co., Va. Militia for 1779 and was over 18.  There is evidence that Joseph was in the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774; in this he had his right hand shot off.  In the 1787 Census of Rockingham Co., Va. , Joseph was living next to his father in law John Nelson as indicated by Morton's Pendelton History.
Nearly all of the Summerfields of Randolph Co., are descendants of Joseph Summerfield. Joseph's first wife (unknown)  must have died, and he supposedly married Winnie Nelson. During this time  they were living in Pendleton Co.  About 1800 Winnie began "fooling around" with John Lambert, Jr. and in 1801 Winnie had a son named Caleb and Joseph must have known that Caleb was not his son.  John and Winnie ran off to Tennessee for about 10 years in 1802. Joseph married his third wife Abigail White the widow of Thomas White, Sr.

According to a Book " Bonded Passengers to America." Thomas and Joseph were tried for stealing a silk waistcoat in England.  They were shipped to America for their punishment.

According to " Pendleton Co., WV., Court Order Book #3 Pg. 286 1794-1800

HI TAMMIE,
SOUNDS LIKE WE MAYBE RELATED. I AM SEARCHING THE THOMAS SUMMERFIELD, BROTHER OF JOSEPH. I HAVE INFO ON JOSEPH, BUT NOT THEIR PARENTS. THEY CAME TO AMERICA BECAUSE THEY STOLE A SILK WAISTCOAT AND WERE SENTINCED TO SHIPMENT TO THE COLONIES. THE LISTING SAY: THOMAS AND JOSEPH SENTENCED TO TRANSPORTATION STEALING WAISTCOAT AT OLD SWANFORD LENT 1765 WORCESTERSHIRE. FROM THE RANDOLPH COUNTY WEST VIRGINIA HISTORY-FAMILIES P. 143-144. THOMAS & JOSEPH WERE BROTHERS. THEY BOTH JUST "POPPED UP" IN THE PENDLETON COUNTY REGION IN THE EARLY 1770"S NO ONE HAS YET FOUND WHERE THEY CAME FROM. THOMAS WAS THE ELDER BROTHER, BEING BORN ABOUT 1750. JOSEPH WAS BORN BEFORE 1761; HE WAS ON THETHE MUSTER ROLL OF AUGUSTA CO., VA MALITIA FOR 1779 AND WAS OVER 18. THERE IS EVIDENCE THAT JOSEPH WAS IN THE BATTLE OF POINT PLEASANT IN 1774; IN THIS BATTLE HE HAD HIS RIGHT HAND SHOT OFF IN THE 1787 CENSUS OF ROCKINGHAM CO., VA. JOSEPH WAS LIVING NEXT DOOR TO HIS FATHER-IN-LAW, JOHN NELSON.
NEARLY ALL OF THE SUMMERFIELDS OF RANDOLPH COUNTY ARE DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH. JOSEPH'S FIRST WIFE (NAME UNKNOWN, MUST HAVE DIED, AND HE SUPPOSEDLY MARRIED WINNIE NELSON. DURING THIS TIME THEY WERE LIVING PENDLETON CO. ABOUT 1800 WINNIE BAGAN "FOOLING AROUND" WITH JOHN LAMBERT, JR. IN 1801 WINNIE HAD A SON NAMED CALEB AND JOSEPH MUST HAVE KNOWN THAT CALEB WASN'T HIS SON. JOHN AND WINNIE RAN OFF TO TENNESSEE FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS. IN 1802 JOSEPH MARRIED HIS THIRD WIFE ABIGAIL WHITE, THE WIDOW OF THOMAS WHITE, SR.

I HAVE FOUND ONLY 5 CHILDREN OF JOSEPH AND WINNIE.
1.SARAH 1787 M/JOSEPH ROY, JR.
2.THOMAS SUMMERFIELD II 1790 M/MARTHA GRAGG, ANNA RAINES
3. MARY 1794 M/ ADAM SNIDER
4. MARGARET 1796 M/ ABRAHAM WOLFORD
5. JESSE 1799 M/RACHEL JORDAN.

I HOPE THIS IS A HELP AND NOT JUST A REPEAT OF WHAT YOU HAVE. THOMAS IS MY GGGGGF. WHERE DO YOU FALL IN JOSEPH'S LINE. I AM ALSO LOOKING FOR MORE CHILDREN OF THOMAS AND ELIZABETH ROY, SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF JOSEPH ROY.

121Winnie is a daughter of John and Sarah (Stearns) Nelson.
Winnie later ran off with a John Lambert Sr and went to Tennessee where they produced a family. No divorce records were found for Winnie or John. They had a daughter Sarah in 1807 and died on August 11, 1871 in Randolph County, West Virginia. Sarah Married Joseph White who is a son of David White a son of Thomas White and Abigail Grubb and Elizabeth Summerfield daughter of Joseph Summerfield and Winnie Nelson.

[from a pdf file from the web on Joseph Summerfield]. . . We don’t know how long he was in jail, but we do know that he married Abigail Grubb White (Thomas’ widow) in 1802. He had previously been married to Winnie Nelson and they had six children. Around the time he was in jail, Winnie had an affair with another man and ran off with him to Kentucky where they stayed for several years...
Notes for Abigail (Spouse 2)
Note: Slave of Indian Blood Owned by White. Her father was a runaway slave.518
????[this is the only reference to this that I have found . . . I’m still searching for another source . . . see the following . . .]

... of Delaware-Seneca blood ... ?

[GRUBB,ABIGAIL,RANDOLPH COUNTY,WEST VIRGINIA,b.1782,m.1800 to Thomas White, was slave of Thomas Rebecca Whitney-Smith <wittysmith@aol.com> Klamath Falls, OR USA - Saturday, April 15, 2000 at 03:52:36 (EDT)
121Abigail Grubb on November 04, 1800. She was a daughter of Joseph and Unknown Grubb and was born in 1782 . She was of Cherokee Indian Blood and a slave of Thomas and Rebecca Whitney-Smith of Klamath Falls, OR . Her father Joseph was a runaway slave. ]

427[If you read this, it is non-sensical… a slave in Klamath Falls in the 1700s? We are re-assessing the Grubb thing altogether. It appears that the only place the name turns up is with EC Wyatt. This might be entirely true, but it isn’t substantiated. There are no records at all where even David is referred to as David Grubb White…it is always David White. I like to believe that it will eventually turn out to be right. But for now, there isn’t much to make it look that way.]

Va. and had my GGGG Grandfather David White b;1786,who married Elizabeth Summerfield in 1800. -------------

Thomas, John, and William White settled in Virginia(West Virginia) about 1772/1775. John and William settled near Elkins and were both killed by Indians 1777/1778. Thomas settled in Job, Randolph, WV.

The first of the White Family to locate in eastern Randolph County was Thomas White SR. He located at the Mouth of Laurel Fork Creek in or around 1789. Thomas had 2 wives the first was Elizabeth Tabb and the second was Abigial Grubb. Abigail was Seneca and Delaware Indian and was a slave before becoming Thomas' wife. The children of Thomas were as follows!

David White born around 1782 in Pa. and married Elizabeth Summerfield, daughter of Joseph Summerfield and Winnie Nelson. David moved to Adair township , Camden County, Missouri and was last known to be there in 1850 at the age of 68!
