90 Willie Nicholas Jones was born on February 20, 1876 while the family was still living in Abingdon, Knox County, Illinois. He moved to Southwick with the family in 1888. He married Ella Belle Gurnsey on November 2, 1901 at Denver, Idaho. Ella Belle was born in Kent in Loop County, Nebraska on December 12, 1885. She moved with her family from Taylor, Nebraska to Southwick in 1891. Her father was a judge in Taylor, Nebraska from 1882-1886. His name was Arthur Milton Gurnsey. Ella Bell’s mother was Mary Adelphine Burns. Ella had three brothers: Charles, Albert, and Delbert. She also had four sisters: Lucinda, Hattie, Albertha, and Mamie.
The Gurnsey family moved west with a wagon train of 30 covered wagons. The party left Taylor, Nebraska May 15, 1891 and arrived in Southwick September 13, 1891, just two days short of four months. Arthur Gurnsey wanted to homestead on the reservation when he arrived in 1891, and died prior to the opening of the reservation in 1895. He was logging and was injured when thrown off a load of logs. His widow, Mary Adelphine Burns Gurnsey, received a $1000 Civil War insurance. With this payment she purchased a place just outside of Southwick, getting 40 acres and the house for $700. This was known as the Sam Bradshaw place.
In 1902, Willie and Ella Belle moved to the Gurnsey home place and cared for Mrs. Gurnsey and one of Ella’s sisters. Willie farmed the 40 acres and worked out for others in the area until his death in 1927. They had three children. Bertha Jones, who was born July 29, 1902; and Edna Irene, May 31, 1911. They also had a son, Emery Nichols, who died in infancy May 17, 1913. Bertha married Joseph Tschantz on December 15, 1925. They had three children: Betty Ellen, born October 28, 1929; Robert, born September 3, 1927; and Joseph, born Jun 1, 1931. Betty died at the age of seven in 1936. Edna married Loyd Eckman December 25, 1927. They had two children, Leonard born January 10, 1944, and Linda, born February 3, 1945. Loyd died in 1964 and Edna married James Bower on June 7, 1969.
