Not much is known...
In 1870 he was a minister and living in Freedom, Lafayette, Missouri with wife Mary E and children William B, Stephen Y, John S and Grace T, who were all born in Virginia. Wife Mary E seems to have been the landowner of the rather sizeable estate that had been recently purchased.
Mary must have died, because we then have a marriage between William and Sarah Margaret Boone on September 22 of 1876.
The next record we see shows Sarah Margaret living with her mother and etc. in Washington, Jackson County, Missouri along with her stepson William B Gordon.
My guess would be that Sarah Margaret lost most of that family to some epidemic or disaster, prior to 1880. One researcher states that William died later in DC, but I can find no record of that, and there was a black William F Gordon and family living in that area during the right time frame.
